I've been playing on private servers for over ten years now. I did jump on WoW Classic back when it initially launched, but canceled and boycotted right after the Blitzchung incident and went back to privates. I was most recently playing on Turtle WoW for the past 6 or whatever years and even after the shuttering of that server, no way in hell is Microsoft getting my money.
Blizzard is and has been a shell of what it was in the 90's for at least 15 years now, possibly longer. Blizzard is nothing but a name anymore, still riding on what made it great 30 years ago.

I have not official since 2013 BESIDES two short juants with Classic Re-release (2019) and SoD.
Considering blizzardsofts major fuckups (lol the fratboy stuff), their inability to actually make an interesting game nowadays, and their inability to control their bots. I don't think anything will make me come back short of dozens of friends pressuring me with some serious evidence they somehow magically changed.
Blizzard customer service is such a massive joke. They have no real GMs, I remember in classic Re-release reporting a BLATANT bot for weeks straight, only to give up because blizzard refused to take action.
I just don't think the company cares anymore, and I wish more people would tell them to pound sand and join private servers honestly.
It is surprising how much Turtle WoW absolutely devoured Blizzard's lunch when it comes to quality and care of the IP.

Which sounds a bit rich for a game essentially form pirates, I suppose, but then I don't feel too sorry when they get shut down either.
If they all contributed their fixes and enchancements upstream, not only would the project as a whole be much more developed (which benefits everyone, players and devs), but also pretty hard to take down.
If you're going to run the game as a passion project, like the current City of Heroes Homecoming devs (who cap donations at server costs), then I support that 100%. But if you're going to try to run this as a business, and try to profit off of it, not just cover costs? Then you're playing with fire, and shouldn't be shocked if you're get badly burnt.

This wasnt a Nostalrius situation where the French courts would've easily bent the knee, and that shows in the fact that Blizzard could never really shut down Elysium, the successor server.
Only Turtle WoW's community manager turned out to be a US citizen that could have faced serious legal trouble from Blizzard.
My guess is that Torta either thought it was better to shut down Turtle WoW and quietly rebuild another major private server behind the scenes, or they've made some kind of deal with Blizzard. Their restructuring as Moonwhisper Games kinda suggests the latter in some outlandish what-if scenario, as if they were announced as the developers of Classic+ in November, Blizzard would earn some serious brownie points.
Where does this leave Ascension? I mean unless they were stupid enough to operate within America or Western Europe, I don't think there's much Blizzard can do aside from pressure ISPs, hosting providers and payment processors to blacklist them.

Blizzard's version of Classic+ is almost certainly imminent and they're on the warpath shutting down all the private servers ahead of its reveal. A photo of a timeline supposedly leaked recently showing the WoW franchise's upcoming slate of projects -- the internet of course went sleuthing and... well, the tl;dr is that dates are checking out and it looks like there's something to it.
Before you click the link below: "Camelot" is likely the internal codename for Classic+ and set for this fall (or at least it was last year). But there are some other Warcraft projects on that timeline too, so don't look too closely at the image if you want to potentially be surprised at BlizzCon.
