So it's been a long while since I touched it, so disclaimer I may be wrong or it may have been patched. But the game was designed around randomized options or selection of civilization traits as you advanced through the ages, rather than one set civilization you play per run. I like the idea a lot on paper, but in practice it had a lot of problems:
Way harder to balance while making options feel meaningful and distinct.
Loss of a sense of unique progression that fit your culture, especially since eras were named after historic cultures.
Lack of differentiation between civilizations and runs.
So maybe randomization isn't the right word but rather customization in an eras grand strategy. Civ 7 is currently fighting an uphill battle on the same issue too.
I’m wondering if those scenes are traditional CGI and costumes, or all AI generated. I’m not suggesting in saw anything that would indicate the latter, but since it’s obviously not in-game it just...

The first half of the trailer is extremely uncanny valley and unsettling in a way that would make me personally assume AI generation. It's weird and offputting and unpleasant in ways that AI output commonly is. Also the "characters from the past doing selfies" type stuff is such a typical novelty that people use genAI for that they maybe unintentionally painted themselves into that corner thematically
If they are to be believed it's incredible to me that they put that amount of work into something I personally think looks so awful it could easily pass as a generative AI video mess.
Nothing in that looked like AI to me? Aside from the general blur, there's none of the sort of structural wobbliness in the fine details or failure to maintain architectural consistency that read...

While it is not AI (and the company has clearly stated as much) and it does avoid most of those glaring obvious things for sure, it does IMHO carry some similar type of "feel" that AI videos that have generated humans exhibit- an uncanny nature to the faces and just an "off" and very specific vibe that is hard to articulate, not to mention the thematic choices
It's sort of a situation where I think they just unfortunately got hit by expectations happening in reverse because there's a look or a vibe to AI video and if you make something legitimate that somehow steps close enough to a similar look then assumptions get made. I think enough people have seen some weird novelty genAI content that the similarities might be triggering some pattern matching in their mind
To be frank I thought it just looked plain awfully done too, so some people might think it's bad and assume bad always = AI which is it's own problem
I've seen some AI music video content that was upfront admitted to be AI but they reduced the artifact and structural problems enough to initially be pretty convincing and it was a video of what looked like real humans.
(For the record, my feelings about AI aside, I think it's okay to discuss but I do want to avoid legitimate artists getting witch hunted or called out for using genAI when they aren't- I admit that's a legitimate problem now that the waters have been muddied so much by what i view as grifters)

Yeah I didn’t see anything that really made me think it was AI, as noted in my original comment. I’m just surprised if it wasn’t due to the expense of it being otherwise— it’s not one of two thematic sets, it’s like 10 or something (not going back to count), and each for one a short clip.
My presumption would be that measuring costs, they’d just do AI. Especially since AI, until recently, was pretty much good for short clips and not good at keeping consistent characters (and so something like this video would be a good candidate). And AI video gen has become very good, especially when professionally managed— I don’t know if the typical “tells” would have to be present.
I’m not looking to witch-hunt, I honestly don’t care if it’s used or not. This was more like “I really wonder if it’s ai or not, because I’m not sure I can differentiate anymore”.

I wouldn't call myself a huge Civ fan, having probably only about 250-300 hours between Civ 5 and 6, but I do enjoy them and sometimes I get the itch for a game and I think what they do so well is that they have such a nice character and flow to them. Humankind just seemed kind of dead and bland to me and I never really felt compelled to keep going with it after two or three dozen turns or something.
There's something in the simplicity of Civ that keeps me at it and coming back for more periodically.

There are some things Humankind does a lot better than Civ, in my opinion. They solved the one-unit-per-tile problem, and improved combat a lot (including making attacking cities actually fun). I love the concept of changing culture every era (which was incorporated into Civ 7), and the endgame isn't as much of a horrible slog as in Civ. Their take on barbarians and minor civilizations is interesting, and I like the way trading and diplomacy works. But they didn't quite crack the just-one-more-turn addictiveness of Civ.
Humankind was also very buggy at launch, and I do hope the sequel will be more polished by the time they release it.

Can you elaborate?

However the company already got backlash and claims it wasn't genAI and featured "real actors, set designs, and props"

I played a lot of endless legend, and i also couldn't get into humankind at all. I can't define why, but it just didn't feel fun, I guess
