At least for me, without an official client it's going to be hard for GOG to compete with Steam. I still buy any games I can from there because DRM free is great, but if I have a game on both places I usually reach for Steam.

On the Linux-support front, GOG used to be a big force for change there and now they're just getting repeatedly curbstomped by Steam. With the exception of NBA 2K17, my entire Steam library now works on Linux with a single click. I can barely tell which games are native and which aren't. GOG's falling behind and don't seem interested in catching up, sadly.

It really is impressive how well valve has made linux gaming work. I have been playing windows games using the new steam play. Yes I could do that with wine myself but having it built in to the client is much easier than managing wine myself and having a windows version of steam installed as well.

Interestingly GOG's Linux push used basically the same technique, releasing a bunch of Wine-wrapped games. Then they stopped. I assume they did some math on the cost of making a working Wine-wrap versus the additional sales it added, and it just didn't add up.

The difference is that Valve doesn't individually wrap every single game, making the process a lot more cost-effective. GOG might have been able to do the same, had they ever gotten around to releasing their Galaxy client on Linux. Maybe they will, eventually, if Valve's most recent Linux push turns out successful.

It seems GOG has done nothing new for years while valve keeps pushing linux gaming further every year and has easily surpassed GOG.

Something I find awful and hilarious: at the bottom of this article there's a link to buy Witcher 2... on Amazon.

We sometimes link to retailers (e.g. Amazon) and receive money from any purchases made. These links do not influence editorial decisions in any way. They only appear in articles related to the product in question and use neutral language, for example: "Order [this product] from Amazon."

It does explain why they'd link to Amazon over GOG in this case, though. edit: But I do appreciate the transparency.
