It seems to me that Quest for Glory III actually tends to get more flack than Quest for Glory V. The most typical fan ordering is probably IV, I, II, V, III.
It's funny how IV, despite being atrocious in terms of bugs, is still arguably the most captivating and memorable entry in the series. The action parts and battles felt really innovative for the adventure genre, and the art was really solid.
The article says how the "horror" aspects come across as overly campy, which is true and even as a kid I partly recognized it, but there are certain parts that are actually a bit scary to a kid. I'm thinking of certain monsters, walking through the forest at night, the monastery you sneak into as a thief, the graveyard, and probably the castle.
On a related note, Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption is currently 35% off on GOG. It was kickstarted by Lori and Corey Cole and is clearly a spiritual successor to Quest for Glory, and looks like it's gotten decent reviews, although I haven't had a chance to try it yet.

There's also the free game Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok which is heavily inspired by QFG.
