The Square Enix showcase is this evening PDT (early hours of Tuesday morning for Europeans), so that'll probably have the actual announcement & details - so far I think the date is all anyone knows.

people keep saying that but how do they know that? Octopath did perfectly fine. and actually out sold square's expectations. People want turn based combat. Especially for a remake of a game.

It makes for much more of a planned, strategic experience - different, but not inherently better or worse. To say that users don't want that, especially in the context of a remake, is a big statement to make.

Personally, I think redoing the battle system is a huge mistake that's surely made the development far harder. It means that they basically have to redesign all of the game's skills, materia, equipment, enemies, etc. to all work in an action-based system instead of being able to just use everything from the original.
For example, there are some famous, extremely difficult fights in the game like Ruby Weapon. How do you redo that battle so that it's as difficult and iconic in an action-based system? Do you make certain attacks very powerful and hard to dodge? What if that just turns the fight into more of a test of reflexes?
I think this was a huge (and completely unnecessary) risk for them to take, since there are so many ways it could go wrong and end up with everyone hating the remake because it changes iconic elements.
My understanding was that the FF7 remake was to be released episodically, to fund development over time. Is that no longer the case?
