I'm really enjoying The Outer Worlds, actually doing a couple parallel playthroughs to compare different paths and I'm very impressed at how different the story branches are.

One complaint I have is that stealth takedowns / assassinations are non-existent. If you attack an NPC while hidden, I think you do some bonus sneak damage but it's not obvious... and that's about it. Even if you one-shot your target, all the other NPCs in the area will be aggro'd. There is no way (that I've found) to ghost your way through a location, killing everyone while remaining undetected. Considering there's a whole "Sneak" skill and "sneaky" weapons like 1-handed blades and silenced pistols, it seems like a big oversight to me that you can't play this way.

A related issue is that if you kill someone your reputation with their faction is immediately affected, even if there were no witnesses. You should be able to cover your tracks to avoid consequences.

Both of these things were better handled by Skyrim, in my opinion, and I would've loved it if TOW used some of the same design ideas.

That's not entirely true. AFAIK detection is largely based on noise level, and each weapon has a different noise range (which you can see in the detailed weapon stats). Guns can also have their noise distance reduced with the silencer-like attachment. I played with a silenced sniper rifle for quite a while and even out in the open in a tight group I could kill 2-3 people before the rest aggro'd.

I think all the melee weapons have a different noise range stats too. So it could just be that you're using a noisy melee weapon? I no longer have the game installed since I already finished it, and the wiki doesn't have that information, so I have no way of checking.

I'll play around and see if I can figure that out. I may have assumed that all the weapons designated as "1-handed melee" were functionally the same.

I never played melee, and other than the silenced sniper rifle I didn't focus on stealth at all, so I'm not sure if your armor type also effects your ability to stay stealthy... but I do know that there is an armor mod that reduces noise from player movement, so that is something you might want to experiment with as well, if you get the chance.

Edit: the armor mod is called Nightingale Step
