Edit: holy crap, I sponsored this in May of 2015

How does it compare to Diablo 3? I generally enjoyed Diablo 3 after the removal of the auction house.
How about Path of Exile? I enjoyed dipping my toes in that one, but the learning curve relative to Diablo was so huge it was a bit overwhelming it hampered my enjoyment.

I'm playing it right now. Their servers are getting hammered, so unfortunately online play is off the table since it keeps erroring out whenever you try to connect, but offline solo play is working fine. Though you unfortunately can't transfer offline characters to online play, so if you primarily want to play online, unless you're fine with completely re-leveling a new online character later, I would suggest waiting to buy/play the game until they sort the online issues out.

As for the game itself, so far it feels a lot like POE (and to a lesser degree D3) in terms of game mechanics, but the skill tree is way less overwhelming, and total attib respec only costs gold, which you can get from just selling trash gear, and total skill respec only costs the other in-game currency which you get from selling unwanted skill gems (which are reasonably abundant)... so IMO it's way better than in POE, where you can only refund 1 skill point at a time using rare drops. I also like that your initial character selection doesn't really matter in Wolcen, since all it does is determine your starting gear (which is crap anyways), and any char can spec in any direction and use any gear thereafter.

The story seems interesting so far too. It's dark, the voice acting is great, and I am getting a very strong "are we the baddies?" vibe from it.

One of my gripes is lots of games don't even have an offline mode anymore, so this is an awesome value-add. While re-rolling can suck, there's very legitimate reasons to not allow transfer from offline to online, specifically it lets hackers and duping run rampant.

A great feature would be an option to let online hardcore characters get transferred to offline mode on death.

        Status update from twitter:

Servers and server capacities are currently being deployed and will be fully functionnal in a few hours. We're also preparing a hotfix for progression reset issues. We will push that hotfix in a few hours as well.

And the progression reset issue is apparently a bug somewhere in Act II that is resetting some people's character progress. Thankfully I haven't encountered it yet though.

Another update... you are able to connect to the online mode now, and create your character, but in my experience so far, it's still pretty wonky playing with other people. There are constant disconnects, desyncs, crashes, etc. But hey, at least you can level up your online character solo without many issues now.

The servers have been offline since Friday night, and it looks like they may be down for some time while they sort this latest mess out: https://steamcommunity.com/games/424370/announcements/detail/3241965989308668872

            Hello everyone,

After applying a hotfix last friday, users reported that their characters were missing, their stashes emptied, and their endgame progression wiped.

Immediately, we took the decision to shut down servers to prevent this from happening to a large amount of players while we find a way to fix it.

This issue was caused by a too large amount of requests leading the database to drop. We contacted our partners and looked for a solution with them, but that implied rolling back to a previous save of the database shortly before the hotfix.

Since then, we are working with our partners to restore the database and merge it with the current one, while fixing the issues that caused these incidents.

Unfortunately, other complications appeared in the process that led us to continuously push back the ETAs we provided for the resolution of the situation, and we're still working hard to fix these issues and make sure that the game works properly Online, which can still take some time.

Know that we're aware of other issues, including issues impacting the game's economy, and we're also working on them.

We want to sincerely apologize for the inconvenience, and to assure you that we're working around the clock to fix everything and ensure that you will have a pleasant experience when the Online mode comes back.

We will keep you informed on the evolution of the situation.
