This game looks exactly how I imagined it when I was a kid. It's breathtaking.

A band of eco-terrorists takes on a multinational Power Company. Wasn't that super clear?

Is it true that it's not the whole game though? (i.e.: it's a remake of the first disc of FFVII)? I can't find anything definitive on that.

The game is going to be a series. You have to throw away your concept of the original's 3 disc run. This is part 1 of the new story, its got a beginning middle and end, with a tie in hook at the end for part two if it sells well.

This is a single game, in which you can finish in 40-50 hours, that has the potential for a sequel. It's no different than any other multi-release series except that we know where the story needs to go.

I don't mind it. To be honest those first five or so hours in Midgar are my favourite part of the original. The rest of the game is great but the Midgar section is just sublime. The city is so atmospheric, with so much potential and we saw so little of it in the original. It'll be nice to see it expanded into a full games worth of content.

But I gave it a shot. I'll give this a shot, even if they change some of the things that appealed to me about the original.

There are just two things I don't think can be changed because of how integral they are to the characters/game world. Unfortunately it seems like they are angling to make one of those changes as fan service, so I will have to see how it plays out.

First of all keep in mind the series is an anthology. From a story perspective, there is no good or bad point to get in.

From a gameplay perspective if you are into action game mechanics than you will enjoy this game. It has a fairly well fleshed out battle system with 4 diverse characters that play with very different mechanics.

The game has some... Quirks, that were beloved by fans but might throw you off. There's a cross dressing minigame. There's a talking Lion/Dog/Native American hybrid. There's a black dude whos characterization is vaguely insensitive. Theres a point in the game where you can choose to ascend 60 floors worth of stairs, where your characters bitch and moan the entire way up.

With that said, I am seeing some buzz that if Cyberpunk gets delayed this game will have a free run at Game of the Year. If you are looking for w fun action game with an jRPG story than you might enjoy this.

I'm sure there will be some minor callbacks to the original that might go over your head but the story is stand alone and the gameplay is modernized so why not?

I'd say if it looks like it's tickling your fancy, go for it. The franchise itself isn't necessarily something to be concerned about per se. Each entry stands alone and separate from the rest; they aren't sequels and aren't connected by much more than some recurring items, character names, and the occasional mechanic.

Forget all that. I like FFXV now.

I have the latest one. I like the atmosphere but the action elements felt silly. If combat is not truly action oriented, it looks like Iā€™m being cheated.

This looks stunning. It's hard to capture the magic of FFVII now because gaming has come so far and is so much more mainstream and widespread, but at the time of its release, FFVII was a landmark event. Nothing like it had been done before. It was vast, massive, and incredible.

Furthermore, I genuinely believe that the beginning of the game is excellent. Great pacing, interesting setting, and a solid introduction to compelling characters. I've talked before about how it's killed other JRPGs for me, because their introductions tend to be boring, generic expositions. FFVII, instead, throws you directly into the middle of a terrorist plot that you yourself are carrying out!

Plus, I still think Midgar's design and feel are amazing. When I was a kid it really did feel like this huge, amazing, futuristic city. When I replayed it as an adult, I was surprised by how much of that was the smoke and mirrors of great artistic direction and game design. I'm glad to see that they've made a full game out of this section of the game, as I think there's so much there that they could meaningfully expand on.

It is very odd for me to hear voiced dialogue, though, as I'm used to FFVII being a whole lot of blue text boxes. I don't have a PS4 and have no intentions of getting one, but I will absolutely get this should it release on PC.

I've never considered the pacing but, but now that you mention it, it was really well done wasn't it? Straight into the bombing run, quick turn around in the slums, off to the next reactor, meet Aerith, meet the Turks, quick turnaround in Sector 5, Wall Market, plate collapse, invading Shinra HQ. Just boom boom boom. I can't think of any part of that section that dragged. Just a well designed opening.

Hopefully they can capture the same feeling.I wonder what the atmosphere above the plate will be like. We never really saw that part of the city in three original.

How do you feel about emulation? I've been playing the original on my phone for the last month and the only place it suffers is no dedicated shoulder buttons.

Looking at maybe going with the Steam release, then adding QoL mods, and playing with a USB-based gamepad. Physical portability might be a real benefit though, so I might start looking at the Switch release too.

Should you want a more "authentic" setup, it's also available on the Playstation Classic, which you should be able to find relatively easily and cheaply, since it appears they massively undersold.

They never confirm PC releases for any game because it encourages some PC owners to buy the game twice. If it sells well it will come to PC.

Final Fantasy has been doing really well on PC the last couple of years - including an FF7 port release. They finally clued in to the fact more people play old Final Fantasy emulating than they do on console. They aren't very good at doing those ports (FF13 needed significant mod support) but apparently with 15 they did a lot better.
