I absolutely loved THPS 1 and 2 when they launched about 20 years ago. It was one of my favorite games growing up so I've been really excited about the remake.
Now that I've had a chance to try out the demo I'm even more excited about the full version coming out in less than a month. The controls are extremely smooth, the combos are difficult to pull off and feel satisfying and the whole thing feels like an extremely polished and modern re-imagining of the old games, without making any compromises or sacrifices.
I didn't really get into THPS 3 and 4, but the limited amount I played made it feel a bit too easy to wrack up huge combos. And the story on THUG 2 made no sense, so I hadn't really touched the series since then. Though I had heard the later games weren't well received at all.
This feels like a return to what I consider the absolute height of the series. And as I'm playing I can feel my muscle memory returning after well over a decade, which is an absolutely wild feeling.
Also, how cool is it that they renamed the Mute Grab to the Weddle Grab to honor it's creator and frankly just be less offensive.
I'm really excited about this! My only frustration is that they didn't just do THPS 1-4 in one go, as THPS4 is probably my favorite. But I also have very fond memories of playing the original on the family N64 with my little brother.
I think I recall hearing someone talk about them doing a 3+4 remake together if this does well
Demo is only available to pre-order customers.
Looks amazing. I think they've done soundtrack an injustice though, using the same songs is a massive cop out. I know selecting the right songs for this would be a huge task, but I don't think this was the best solution.
Throwing in a bunch of new songs would be the icing, something from this generation. I could see FIDLAR having a big showing here (like they will in Bill & Ted 3), SeeYouSpaceCowboy, Dropout Kings, or any multitude of new punk music.
Hell, throwing Sunrise Skater Kids in there would be hilarious (for those not in the know, it's a collection of some all time great punk artists coming together with a satirical YouTube account who create a 'fictional' punk band and produce some solid music making fun of punk and pop punk music).
