WoW expansions are on a 2 year cycle, the next one is coming in 2022 (though they'll probably do a big update). Heroes of the Storm is dead, Warcraft 3 Reforged was a disaster, so no big update can be coming there.

    That leaves us with Hearthstone?

I mean I'm looking forward to the cinematics, those are always top notch, but barring a new game announcement I don't see what could be so interesting.

It doesn't all need to be totally new game announcements anyway, I'm sure there's a ton of details to reveal about all the upcoming games that we already know about.

Oh I agree. The community stuff is great especially for fans, it's just for an outsider the good things are the announcements and maybe the trailers (Blizzar does make very good trailers).

Hearthstone has a bit going on that they could fill time with:

      • A new Core Set and format restructure, so that every player starts with the new card base and can build competitive decks from the word go.
      • A Classic mode that brings the game back to the 2014 meta, where cards are unnerfed and expansions are banned.
      • An unknown format TBA to complement Duels, Battlegrounds, Arena and the constructed ladders. (Wild, Standard, and Classic)

It's interesting because Heroes is actually having a bit of a renaissance in the competitive scene. Their official Heroes esports Twitter account just got re-activated a few months ago and is tweeting out about all the competitive stuff suddenly cropping up. Even some bigger streamers have been going back to it all of the sudden.

The game was officially put on life-support a couple years back and had its budget drastically reduced, so it's not necessarily surprising that Heroes doesn't have any presence at this year's Blizzcon. But the suddenly resurgence of the game is a little bit interesting and during a time when Blizzard is obviously struggling to put out new content (as your comment points out), I'm surprised they aren't just leaning into HoTs as a sort of hail mary pass to do something.

WC3:R is an interesting story, definitely. My best guess is that they just aimed to high and failed to deliver. The fact that it got launched in such a state just shows that the Blizzard so many people respect has long been dead.

On the bright side, a group of Russian gamers (playing on a hacked client to avoid the above) recently contacted me for an unprotected copy of a strategy map of mine that they love playing, and they are actively working on a translation and changes as they see fit, so that's nice.

Warcraft 3 persevering would be a fucking great thing. Do you have any names I could look up further?
