Actually, I disagree, or at least have a stance that is perpendicular to yours. I think that this only came about specifically because of the pandemic. Online Play is not a core feature of "couch casual" games, and is almost antithetical to Nintendo's philosophy on what Mario Party is - it's a get-together, an experience that you share all in the same place. That's actually how they pitch the Switch - it's an experience that you have together with someone in a "real" space, not online. I understand that that isn't the reality for a lot of people - gaming is something you do from the comfort of your own gaming location - but if you look at what Nintendo is pitching with the switch, it isn't online - it's togetherness in a real space. I don't think they are particularly good at the online experience in many of the games they release, and they shine as a console that you play together with friends, having an emphasis on fun.
It would be interesting to see if this addition makes it by default into future Mario Party games.
Tweet from Nintendo about it
Cool that they added this, but it seems like this is something that should have been available from the start.
