FYI: If you already own Quake on Steam (other platforms as well?) you'll be getting this update for free.

Some insider info from one of the developers, MVG - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33T7NPxnEKI - such as 60fps on every console, including Switch, and full NIN soundtrack.

I know there's slightly more to it but it does sort of feel like getting 60fps in a 25 year old game on modern hardware shoudn't really be an achievement of note..

Quake has always had problems running at high frame rates. Not all source ports are able to do it correctly, and none are able to do 144fps as well as this version.

I got into playing the original Quake again a few weeks ago, so this was a welcome addition!

There are modern open-source ports, so the additions aren't very groundbreaking to enthusiasts in the community (the existing ports already handle high and widescreen resolutions, high framerates, more graphics options, working multiplayer functionality), but the nicest thing about this is that finally Quake is a good experience right out-of-the-box on Steam now without having to seek out and compare a set of different ports on your own. The most glaring issues with the experience before was that out-of-the-box, Quake was entirely missing its soundtrack and had no real multiplayer. Now there's an easily functional multiplayer menu right there, and there's tons of competitive and coop matches going on in it. I actually hadn't played Quake 1 multiplayer before (there's specific ports that were used for multiplayer and I hadn't tried them) so it's great to finally see it. I am eager to see if they might extend the multiplayer to work well with mods (like offering a vanilla/mods filter, auto-downloading mods if you join a match with them, etc). I expect the enthusiast modding community will continue to focus on its own ports and treat this main release as the vanilla and beginner experience, but that could easily change if this gets developed a little further.

So there is actually some new content in this too: improved models and a brand new level pack. They're pretty good. The improved models are very appropriate: they're still a very lo-fi style but less rough than the original models. They're like how you probably remembered picturing the models while seeing them on a 640x480 CRT monitor than what the actual models looked like. It's subtle; if you see classic Quake stuff afterwards, you might not notice that there are differences, but the original models will trigger thoughts more often like "these models aged badly". This seems great for a remaster. At the same time, I'm selfishly a little happy that the improved models aren't so good that I'll miss them much when I'm using the pre-existing community-created ports of Quake for mods.

I never played Quake 1 multiplayer but I spent a few hours in deathmatch lastl night and it was great fun! I'm sort of hoping this drives more players in to arena shooters because I feel like the genre is due for a resurgence!

I was stoked to actually jump online with this and do some DM. IDK how open it is to modding, but it would be interesting to see some Team Fortress, or CTF grow out of this. You used to have to use whichever source port is most popular, but it's interesting to see this getting some attention.

It's got some issues, like I had the game load with no textures at one point, it gets frame drops, and other small issues, but I just cleared the first campaign for a test run, and it felt great, and I like that they go with the pixelated textures instead of the glquake and source port default fuzzy ones.

EDIT: I also tried loading the new Quake assets in Quakespasm-spiked, and it had some minor issues where it was displaying event scripts when they were triggered. IDK what that was about.

EDIT2: I had another thought I forgot to put down here: It looks and plays exactly how I try to configure a sourceport to be anyway, so it offers a great ootb experience, I think.

I think some of the new expansion breaks on source ports at the moment due to differences in how they localise text or something but I'm sure they'll catch up!
