Personally, I wonder whether I'm missing something. This looks like a polished indie metroidvania, just with the original brand and a $60 price tag, which seems a bit much. Is it genuinely the story people are excited for (seeing lots of spoiler warnings thrown around)?

It seems this year Nintendo is doing a lot of "niche" titles, getting some intense fan reactions and there is not a single game I care about that deeply. Monster Hunter Rise, Miitopia, Pokemon Snap, Mario Golf, a Skyward Sword remaster, NEO: The World Ends With You, a new Shin Megami Tensei, a new Wario Ware, No More Heroes 3, Metroid Dread... these are all names I heard people get excited over (yes, even Mario Golf) but they all look so... mediocre?

Honestly that list of titles is so diverse it's probably more on you than anything on the games, since they don't really share that many commonalities. The majority of the titles aren't even made by Nintendo - MH:Rise is cross platform to boot! Wario Ware certainly does not have many clones, unlike Metroid, nor does SMT. If they all look mediocre to you, then either you haven't delved deeply into them with an open mind or vast swathes of game archetypes are not to your taste.

The IP for Metroid Dread is indeed a big reason for the hype - and there's nothing wrong with that. Video games are fundamentally entertainment, and our monkey brains enjoy seeing characters we have an ongoing attachment to do things as opposed to new blood. Trying to calculate "intrinsic" values with a rubric for things like games is just pointless - in the end, what matters is how much enjoyment you gain and how much you spent.

Deeply disagreeing on that, that's basically just giving up on games as a medium. I realize that's even further away from a discussion about Metriod Dread and that's my fault, so I apologize and...

I realize that's even further away from a discussion about Metriod Dread and that's my fault, so I apologize and won't go into this any more. (In case you're wondering what I mean, I can recommend quite literally any talk on game design by Jonathan Blow)
