I know the BAFTAs give out awards to video games, but why isn’t “The Game Awards” voted on by a group of programmers, writers, animators, directors, voice actors, etc that work in the industry?
Not really an answer, but for videogames there will probably never be an award more relevant than something like Metacritic. My friends are mostly gamers and we don't care about awards at all....

But even though I don't really love that the show is just about giving the few newest AAA games a ton of awards, I still kind of like watching it. I also always wonder how much do the ads cost for this show, cause there are so so so so many ads there.

As a film buff, I’ve heard the same thing. Oscars are bullshit etc etc. I still really like them, and they’re still representative of the industry.
Yes of course, I am not against awards or anything like that. They have their place. I just don't care much for them myself.

It continues to confuse me why strategy and sim are always in the same category, but maybe they know something about game genres that I don't.
