Thankfully mpox seems far less transferrable than covid19 is, and a vaccine became available in 2022. Those are two huge positives. It does seem the virus is prone to mutation though, which does make it more slippery to defend against. A single mutation could mean the difference between "spread through prolonged contact" and "spread through a handshake".

Hopefully those in higher risk groups are willing to inoculate. I have to admit to having some pessimism based on the previous pandemic response, but somehow I also have faith that we'll do better this time.

That was me. I amended the name for continuity and searchability on the older posts.

A lot of the intra-household transmission in Africa happened because of people washing the bedding of the sick or other sorts of indirect communication.

Yeah the perception of who is higher risk is now changing. Cooking utensils were flagged as a transmission method, and I'm not sure how long "prolonged contact" is at this point, but last I saw droplet transmission was considered a risk. And the focus on sexual contact was stigmatizing families with sick kids leading to longer waits before seeking medical attention and more deaths.

All of which means it'd be great to get vaccines and treatments to the hardest hit countries quickly.

Googling wasn't turning up anything definitive regarding strict guidelines for what "prolonged" skin contact is, but what little there was suggested 10 minutes counted, which covers sex, but also meals with shared cooking utensils, doing laundry, bathing in the same facilities, many of the things that might happen in sharing a space with an infected person.

Everyone is saying that our inability to address this earlier has led to a much more transmissible virus. But the lack of testing available in the country's most impacted currently is making it very difficult to confirm the source of infections.

To make matters more complicated, the original globally distributed clade 2 strain is still circulating. That strain generally requires intimate contact for transmission. There's nothing in the article to indicate whether the person with mpox is actually a new U.S. case of the more infectious clade 1b.

Yeah and I'm not sure they know, depending on how the testing is done
