Fitness Weekly Discussion
What have you been doing lately for your own fitness? Try out any new programs or exercises? Have any questions for others about your training? Want to vent about poor behavior in the gym? Started a new diet or have a new recipe you want to share? Anything else health and wellness related?
Hi my beautiful Tildes Fitness Pals!! It has been a long time since I've done anything other than lurk lol. But I've been busy and I've been working out š¤ but seriously!! I probably got to the gym maybe a couple times a week to help supplement what I'm doing right now.
Roller Derby - I am in phase two of roller derby training! I finally graduated from phase one and it took a fucking year lmao. I have been trying to skate more overall because it's truly you get what you put into it. I've been feeling really confident on my skates now and that's been really nice. I need to work on my speed and crossovers so that's literally going to be me doing laps until I die. Fun!
Ice hockey - the shining glory love of my life, hockey is so incredibly hard and rewarding and fun and it's all sprints during a game lol!! I have so much I want to improve and work on, I've been trying to get at least one separate ice skating or stick and puck session done ontop of my games. I need to be more diligent practicing puck handling at home. God I just want to be fucking good at hockey. It's so fun and physically rewarding, I've done 3 seasons and can't imagine my life without it. I got invited to a low intermediate/intermediate team that I'm super stoked for!
Soccer - just got into it! First time ever playing and I think I'm doing okay!! Only ever really just vaguely kicked the ball around in high school and occasionally with friends. I've been working on my ball control and passing and just really trying to get that to an ok spot. I got invited to play with someone who wants to make a team! Before a game we were talking and he was like "Where'd you learn to play defense?" The answer is nowhere and just that I play hockey and am willing to get up in people's business lol.
Overall a lot of my fitness journey this past year has been fun first!! Moving my body in fun ways first and then supplementing from there with additional practice, drills, or workouts and it's going prettt well! I feel very strong and I'm really proud of all the work I've done!
i bike everywhere and ive been working up the mustard to bike to tkaronto/toronto (im coming from tiohtiĆ :ke/montreal). it'll be my first bikepacking trip so we'll see if i survive; but if i make it my buddy is gonna buy me a skateboard lol
ive been also getting back into a short morning calisthenics routine with pushups (with resistance bands), bicep curls, and standing skull crushers to supplement the cycling since - as my friends say - im "all legs"
Been working out in the gym consistently the past month using the StrongLifts 5x5 program. Iāve been running it 4-5 days a week instead of the recommended 3x a week since Iāve still been working up towards my max weight for each of the compound lifts.
I just decided to modify the program today to reduce the number of times Iām doing each of the main compound lifts to 2x a week. The default program has you squatting at the start of every workout, but 4-5 squat sessions a week doesnāt feel sustainable now that Iām approaching my max weight on that exercise.
I substituted hanging leg lifts for squats on deadlift days and created a third workout of dips, pull-ups, and hanging leg lifts for Wednesdays as a sort of active recovery day midweek.
Iām definitely surprised at how quickly Iāve been able to increase the weight on all the compound lifts so far. I was squatting 170lbs this morning and I stalled out on squat at 180lbs when I was lifting consistently 6 years ago. Hopefully Iāll be able to break through the 180lb āglass ceilingā this time around with better programming.
I've recently started using recovery drinks and creatine as part of my recovery. Earlier I've been kind of blindly thinking that the practice is the thing that matters and nothing else.
Turns out that nutrition and rest are pretty important too.
Also, I got a heart rate monitor and with its help will be adding some low stress exercise biking to my off days.
Creatine is the one supplement that Iāve actually been able to see a noticeable improvement from. Lots of supplements seem to be nonsense, but creatine is nice.
I also appreciate how it makes your muscles hold onto more water, so you look a little better without actually doing anything.
