Got some greater trocanteric pain syndrome, so bursitis or tendinopathy or a combination thereof. No doubt from taking judo falls, but who really knows? Went from being actually unable to walk a couple days ago to being able to hobble around courtesy of cortisone injection and a lot of NSAIDs.

Even though I am technically mobile, I’m supposed to basically treat my situation as being immobile for a while until the actual healing happens and I’m not just masking the pain with drugs. So here I am, on the couch, doing nothing in particular for the foreseeable future.

Were you training for anything in particular or just because it's what you do? The wise mindset is probably to view this as a chance for your body to recover in general; not just from the injury. I know a lot of endurance athletes have come back better than ever after an injury because their bodies got a bit of a reset so they were able to keep the base up with alternative workouts (like the hand cycle/crank instead of running) while only needing a short, specific regimen at the end with a rested body for the first time in a decade or more.

It’s just what I do, normally I train 7 days a week but I don’t compete or anything. I feel like my biggest challenge is going to be adjusting my diet to account for my not doing serious exercise — my weight could balloon out of control in two weeks. You’re right though, my whole body could use the rest.

Yes, calorie intake when output changes is very difficult. Good luck!

Oof i feel that. Takes a while for the brain to remember it doesn't need so many calories. Good luck with the recovery!

Im trying out for two soccer teams in the local amateur league. It kind of sucks though because they both have pros and cons to join, no straight easy decision. And it double sucks being so old that playing hard for one means i show up to the other's tryout with some muscle on the edge of being pulled, inevitably getting pulled when i push.

Ill be happy when this week's over. Four days of soccer in a week is too much for my legs apparently right now.

Climbing has taken a back seat to the soccer for now. When it gets colder, im sure ill prefer the cozy interior of a climbing gym again. On a good day, fully rested, i am flashing v5's so thats nice. Still feel a bit behind schedule for progression but i probably should return to my old gym to do a proper measurement. Weight hovering around 170 despite boozing and pastrying a lot lately, i feel its warranted given the ~12km runs every day during soccer.

I have been lazy for 2 weeks and I’m feeling it, more in my mental state than my physical condition, oddly enough. Today I went for a long bike ride with a friend and it was a good reminder how good it feels to exercise. I’ll resume my morning workouts on Monday.

I’ve been half thinking of maybe joining some sport but I have no idea where to start. Maybe a community center? I don’t really know any sports well. Played a bit of soccer and basketball in high school, but nothing since. A friend likes pickleball, but I have it a shot and it’s not really for me. I tried snowboarding, but I’m just not brave enough to push myself to get better at it. A serious injury is not something I want to introduce in my life. As I get older it’s harder to make friends so I think some sport would be good both socially and physically. I’ll keep mulling it over.

Obviously find what jives with you but sounds kind you mostly just want to get out somewhere and move around. So I'd vote hiking group or golf (regular or disk flavors).

Since my last post I feel like I'm closer to my old form. I also had about a week of break from more strenuous exercise (lots of walking instead), which probably helped.

I had one long session where I focused less on the preset zones on my watch and more on feel, and that was probably a good thing, as I managed to keep active for almost two hours, but mostly in zone 3 instead of zone 2. So that was nice! I'll probably keep that up, though I need quite a lot of recovery after such a long run, so I'll probably not do it every week as is otherwise "recommended".

I also got my old bike up and running (it has had some issues with gears) with some help from my dad. So the plan is to do some cross-training with that, to still get some cardio in but letting the legs rest from running and walking a bit.
