Or read with the eyes but without the inner monologue? Inner voice makes reading much slower. Sadly I default to this. I have to make a real effort to quiet the voice and go straight from eyes to brain.
Also pertinent to your comment, I feel like I’m my case the speed of thinking through something for me is mismatched with reading speed altogether. I think so far in advance in my head that I’ll often say something that to the other person almost makes no sense because I skipped all the middle parts and just verbalized the final conclusion. I assumed they would be there with me but nope. I then tell them how I got there. If only my reading speed matched this! I’d be so fast. In reality I’m more like the original comment. Always been one of the last kids to finish reading the thing. I just pretended to be done. Still do at work to this day, but I have workarounds now and luckily I can BS my way with most things. Thanks, English major, you were useful for one thing, but didn’t improve my reading speed.

Joke aside I am so bad with names. Even when I use that trick of repeating the person’s name when I meet them, half the time it’s gone a few minutes later if not immediately. So frustrating!

Good metabolism, I look good, can eat whatever without gaining weight fast, etc. I would like to gain a bit more muscle but it won’t change my life much. In fact it’s hard to see results even when I am consistent. I do feel the results and feel stronger, but mass-wise I only saw faster gains when I was using protein shakes and creatine which personally I didn’t want to continue putting into my body forever or in the long run.
In terms of tips, what worked for me was start small and habit stacking. I got back into it by making sure I don’t do anything else first thing in the morning. Get up, put the workout shorts and thirst on. This tells my brain ok now that these clothes are on I guess I gotta do it. And then, a short workout. At one point I used an app called Seven. Seven minute workouts, no equipment needed. After a couple of months of that, I found that I naturally wanted more as they became too easy. Build from there. At my peak, I was hitting the gym before work. That was sometime in 2024. Today, I’m back in a funk. I gotta start over, rebuild the routine. So I need to take my own advice here and keep at it.

One, it felt like the money is locked away and I have to jump through hoops to actually get it back: pick the right time to sell, which is at the whim of large trends that are completely out of my control. Didn’t like that.
Second, the banks control exactly what they invest in, which companies and corporations use the funds. This didn’t sit right with me either because some are corporations I see as evil, or disagree with their work or (lack of) values.
Lastly, buying stocks directly eliminates issue number 2, but it’s maximum risk. One day you’re laughing, the next you’re crying. Too much of an emotional rollercoaster.
So I’ve made my peace with it. I’m not maximizing what I get out of my savings, but at least I’m stress free. -

I find it hard to answer “what music are you into?” It depends on my mood, state of mind, etc. and even then I hop around genres quite a bit. With my wife if I’m the one whose music if going in the car, it’s a mix of her being surprised and happy to discover something new and pressing skip. Luckily she likes enough of the heavier stuff, even some of the power metal (small doses for her). I think she draws the line at death metal. Not her cup of tea.

Today I went for a long bike ride with a friend and it was a good reminder how good it feels to exercise. I’ll resume my morning workouts on Monday.
I’ve been half thinking of maybe joining some sport but I have no idea where to start. Maybe a community center? I don’t really know any sports well. Played a bit of soccer and basketball in high school, but nothing since. A friend likes pickleball, but I have it a shot and it’s not really for me. I tried snowboarding, but I’m just not brave enough to push myself to get better at it. A serious injury is not something I want to introduce in my life. As I get older it’s harder to make friends so I think some sport would be good both socially and physically. I’ll keep mulling it over.
After ignoring it for a while, I dusted off my record player and spent a day checking out 3 record stores in town. I think browsing these stores in person, on foot, is part of the fun with this hobby. I found some fun ones.
Samurai Champloo soundtrack (2 discs, had the digital version forever, shocked to find this; Japan import, outrageous price, but I’m happy). One of my favourite anime series of all time.
Lost in Translation soundtrack. Another soundtrack, funny enough. One of my top favourite movies of all time. Love this soundtrack and I can see scenes from the movie with each song.
K-Pop Demon Hunters soundtrack. Ok now you’ll all think my collection is all soundtracks. In fact it’s the opposite. But somehow this is what my trips to the stores materialized! A weird coincidence. This one is a fun pop record. Nothing too deep about it. Some of these songs were stuck in my head when the movie came out and Golden was playing everywhere. I like most of the album.
