I remember really disliking the art direction in the key art they released a few months ago.
None of those feelings returned watching this trailer, and I'm fully onboard with how the show looks. I can't tell if it's an issue with my computer, but the animation looked a little choppy at times. Especially in comparison to the new Avatar movie, or even to Korra from 14 (!!) years ago. But that's easily forgotten if the story is good.
I'm not sure how I feel about the whole "hating the avatar" thing (even if I do agree that Korra was pretty meh). The feelings of hope and reverence the Avatar inspired in the first show were often really effective character building moments, since they either highlighted something about the character or about the Avatar that inspired the feelings in the first place. Unclear if I should put much faith in the showrunners sticking the landing, so I don't know that I'll be buying a Paramount subscription to find out.

The characters were older, the issues were more complex. I found the whole bender/non-bender issue very interesting. I think it got hampered a lot by studio interference, but S3 and S4 were very good.
So to see a return to what seem to be not even 10 year olds, though it's hard pinpoint their actual age given the artstyle, had me worried, because likely the writing would return to a more simplistic style as well. Now it's obvious that they're doing a big brother dynamic which has my hopes up, even though it's obvious from the get-go that the big reveal of the show will be that Korra wasn't evil and likely didn't cause the cataclysm.
I also really enjoyed the vibe of S1 Korra in particular, the 1920s jazz and big band soundtrack did a ton to set the mood, but even the show gave up on that with from S2 onwards, so I wasn't expecting a return to that anyhow.

I'm hoping that the whole Avatar hate thing is going to be like how folks thought the Avatar abandoned the world when Aang was frozen for 100 yrs, and that it'll be something like the only reason there is any world left is because of her efforts and the populace misconstrued it. But we really wanted Korra to just have her happily ever after with Asami so this sucks no matter which way we slice it.

I hear folks talk about their favorite episodes, the ones that make it special, and they're usually written and directed by not-them. ATLA had a bigger writing team and Korra didn't get a woman writer until S03. I don't know if there was a falling out with Aaron Ehasz or what, but he wasn't on Korra and his contributions to ATLA seem sidelined relative to Bryan/Mike since he wasn't a creator, "just" EP and writer.
So yeah more like I credit the success of the Avatar series to the folks they've worked with more than the creators themselves.

I hate that they're going the dystopia future, Mad Max route. Seems very lazy from a world building standpoint. I'd rather see the world progress technologically/politically and how bending evolved around that. Benders and the Avatar in a world with modern or even future tech would be way more interesting to me.
I may be in the minority on that. But I'm not excited to see more young kids going through regular kid stuff, but they have powers and the world is going to break without them again. Which is an oversimplification, but probably not far off. It just feels like they're trying to go back to the roots without redoing ATLA. Almost like Dragon Ball GT.
Don't get me wrong, I'm going to give this show as fair of a shot as I can. I just don't have my hopes up

It played before Married With Children, which was another wholesome TV show about a small family and the struggles of our hero, Al Bundy, in his saga to survive daily middle class life. I don’t know why my parents kept sending me to bed for that one tho. Was it not equally wholesome?
