Nearly half of all people who had healthy eyes before Lasik developed visual aberrations for the first time after the procedure, the trial found. Nearly one-third developed dry eyes, a complication that can cause serious discomfort, for the first time.

From time to time I am considering getting the laser treatment, as I find my glasses inconvenient. But I rely on my eyes in my profession, where sight and color are cruicial. Articles like this make me keep up with the slight nuisance.

Also, whenever I google treatments, there are so many offers, each promising to be better, less invasive than the last one; clinics vary widely in their prices. All seems muddy for such an important procedure.

I've also been considering lasik for convenience. A ton of my family has already done it which makes it seem like no big deal. But I guess I'll have to do more research before jumping in. I wouldn't mind much if I develop an aberration that then goes away in a couple of months, but I wouldn't do it if the aberration is permanent. The level of permanence seems to be where the different studies listed vary or drop the ball.

Well this is terrifying. I've been considering Lasik on and off again for years. This article made me glad I didn't just take the plunge ages ago. Think I'll stick with my glasses a while longer.

I had similar problems... I asked everyone I knew that had already done Lasik what they thought. Most said something along the lines of "Best money I ever spent!" Having polled at least 30 people, I heard no negative feedback. I went to the high end Lasik provider. I went from not needing readers to needing readers (and, yes, I read the warnings on that) - which is not correctable (for me) with contacts. So - I went from the convenience of contacts to now being required to the much less convenient wearing glasses much of the time. But that is not the worst part...

The worst part was - starting about 4 days after the surgery, when I would wake up in the morning my cornea would be stuck to my eyelid and, with just reflexive opening of my eyes (as one does in the mornings), I would rip a tiny piece of my cornea off. In case you are wondering - there are a LOT of nerve endings in the cornea (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornea#Nerve_supply), so this feels much like I would imagine sticking a needle in your eye would. The first time, I had the lidocaine eye drops - which was awesome because then I only had to feel the searing pain for a few seconds until I found the drops. However, upon rushing to the Doctor, he tells me if it happens again, I should not use the drops because they stifle healing.

Well, as you might guess, it happened again - and this time NO LIDOCAINE DROPS. Just saline, which I would do profusely for a good hour until the pain subsided. Aside from a couple of broken ribs a year prior and being stung by a Tarantula Hawk - this was the worst pain I have ever felt.

As you might also guess - it did not happen just twice. After the third time, the doctor decided it best to scrape my cornea to let it "start over". Well - I went through this same scenario for 3 months with 3 separate cornea scrapings before (for whatever reason) it finally stopped.

    You have been warned...

Thank you for mentioning PRK. It sounds like it would work for me due to my severe astigmatism.

The health machine (and I used to work in pharmaceuticals) has a history of going toward proven profit. In past years that's included breast augmentation, tonsillectomies, corrective shoes, proactive orthodontics, statins, and of course LASIK surgery.

By tough experience, some of us have learned to look askance at any treatments that are both popular and elective. I once drafted a story that contained this line: "Bill, we're going to give you cancer." "What? I don't have cancer!" "Yes, but research shows that by inducing relatively benign cancer cells in your blood, we can locate hot spots, weak areas of vulnerability that will help us to treat more serious risks, like leukemia and lung cancer. And as a pleasant side effect, you'll lose weight." "Ohhhhh," replied Bill, thinking about next summer at the beach.

Of course, that will never happen.

That's still me 15 years after the procedure. My vision is considered to be '20/20' also, but I can't drive or go to the movies without glasses.

I've been considering Lasik for years too and a friend warned me about the dry eyes and halo at night issues. I already have pretty dry eyes, and the idea of them being even drier seems unmanageable to me. These number are very scary, since I thought these cases occurred significantly less than they apparently do.
