Comment on Lasik's risks are coming into sharper focus in ~health
m-w From time to time I am considering getting the laser treatment, as I find my glasses inconvenient. But I rely on my eyes in my profession, where sight and color are cruicial. Articles like this...Nearly half of all people who had healthy eyes before Lasik developed visual aberrations for the first time after the procedure, the trial found. Nearly one-third developed dry eyes, a complication that can cause serious discomfort, for the first time.
From time to time I am considering getting the laser treatment, as I find my glasses inconvenient. But I rely on my eyes in my profession, where sight and color are cruicial. Articles like this make me keep up with the slight nuisance.
Also, whenever I google treatments, there are so many offers, each promising to be better, less invasive than the last one; clinics vary widely in their prices. All seems muddy for such an important procedure.

I wonder if my main problem on Reddit is that a brief, derailing joke gets more upvotes than a lengthy, thoughtful reply. Maybe one could set a "funny" flair, and intersperse serious discussion threads with those "funny" remarks?
While I'm at it, a certain weight should be given to posts of a minimum length. Yes, one sentence replies can be helpful, but in a "bang for buck" (read: "karma per keystroke"), short replies are overvalued at reddit.

m-w How about the option to have ones username hidden, once a certain time has passed. That would not break the informational value of old threads, but would prevent crawlers from fetching too much...How about the option to have ones username hidden, once a certain time has passed. But the latter is only true if stored correctly. If you leave it in an attic with lots of humidity and varying temperature, it will degrade. Most films from the past have disappeared, due to degradation.
The same is true for digital, you have to take care of it and follow industry standards. Banks and health institutions have managed to preserve data for multiple decades, and will continue doing so. Archives are catching up, and the computer industry is working hard on finding a long term, migration-free solution to storage. Technicolor for example is working on encoding films into DNA.
So, while it is indeed sad to see film cameras go, I don't agree with the storage point. Quality-wise one can also argue that certain sensors now have a higher resolution and higher dynamic than 35mm film — at a greatly increased sensitivity.

m-w (edited )LinkHave a look at Black Mirror, which is really a bunch of mini-movies, all showing directions that technology could take us as a society. Some of them are very hefty. Definitely make you think.Have a look at Black Mirror, which is really a bunch of mini-movies, all showing directions that technology could take us as a society. Some of them are very hefty. I like the idea of a joke tag, with the ability for the original poster to disallow them.

m-w I'd love to get into underwater photography. I love snorkelling and photography. Alas, as a kid I punctured my ear and cannot dive. Bummer.I'd love to get into underwater photography. I love snorkelling and photography. Alas, as a kid I punctured my ear and cannot dive. Bummer.
I recently deleted all games from my phone, so that when those little moments of nothingness come, I can embrace them. They free your mind and give it space to come up with new ideas.
