Well I'm glad I stopped taking the subway to work. I live and work in Chaoyang District and I'm planning to fly out of Beijing on Thursday, so I'm not really excited about this news. These stories have never worried me, but this one's a little different since I've lost count of the times I freaked myself out daydreaming about outbreak scenarios while crammed on a subway train with dozens of people within arms reach.

This is how authoritarianism fails - you can't simply propagandize or punish away the symptoms of poor public health. It's already happened to China with SARS, then African Swine Fever, where farmers have concealed infections for fear of punitive, uncompensated losses.

Though the response to the latest coronavirus is arguably more aggressive, it's clear that China still doesn't have the capacity to quickly identify, contain, and prevent these risks, or the taste for providing accurate public information found in more open societies. Up until today's evidence that the virus is rapidly spreading to other countries, Chinese sources continued to deny that human-to-human transmission was occurring. Now it's reached the point that President Xi felt obliged to make an announcement of centrally directed action, over a month after the first case cluster reports.

Seems like it's a new strain from the family of Coronaviridae with a connection to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which killed some 774 people in 2002-2003, originating from southern China.

In that outbreak, SARS had a fatality rate of 9,6%, so I wager that with care you'd survive, unless you are a child or the elderly.

From the short read that Wikipedia provides, SARS seems to be really fucking viral, as full quarantine and medicine to treat the symptoms until your immune system deals with the virus, is the only way to treat it. Naturally, high density countries like China are going to be hotbeds for this, which is probably why the CCP is so afraid of the disease spreading to bigger cities.

Disclaimer: I'm not a medical professional.
