I was so excited to share floppotron that I totally missed the ground rules haha. I’ll edit my top level comment with one song.

I’ve been playing ring fit adventure on the switch over the past week and I just got Dragon quest xi yesterday after playing the demo.

I’ve been enjoying both. Ring fit adventure has been great for getting my butt off the couch. I really like the adventure mode. The stages feel like a good mix of different types of exercise and has a decent amount of cardio (if you can count running in place as cardio). I don’t like to exercise, but using this is actually fun.

I don’t have much to say about Dragon Quest xi yet because I’ve pretty much just started. It seems like a pretty standard jrpg with a lot of nostalgia. However, I’ve played maybe a few hours of a different dragon quest many years ago, so I feel like I’m missing out on that nostalgia factor while playing.

Everything in this direct was great except for the dynamax mechanic. I’m getting tired of having a new battle mechanic with every new game that’s abandoned with the next gen. First mega evos, then z moves and now dynamax. Also, this seems like the laziest possible was to do it. “Let’s increase the size and give it an aura, so we don’t have to actually have to design anything.”

Even though, I am being a bit critical of it. Overall, I really liked this direct. The new mons were great and really well designed (although the legendaries were a bit underwhelming for me). I love the direction they’re taking with the wild area (why couldn’t they just call it “the wild” though?) especially with the roaming wild Pokémon. I think the raid mechanic is so cool and can’t wait to do it with some friends. Graphics look so much better than the last two as well. Overall, definitely looking forward to this game.

I do wonder though (excuse my lack of tech knowledge here. You or someone else may be able to refute this) could the hierarchical tags be used in the future to help future site features?

Isn’t this a bit of a null issue since there is an auto-suggestion in the tag box? If I type “law” into the box, it should show me a list of all the “law.” tags and I can pick the one that fits my post the best, so I don’t see how flat tags or hierarchical tags are more or less intuitive than the other.

I think it’s funny to some extent as well, but ultimately most of the expats were upset because it’s hypocritical of the school. I didn’t say this because I didn’t think it was totally necessary, but my school is a foreign language school. They have over 70 people from all over the world working here and the school is supposed to be about teaching languages and different cultures. Many of the students are expected to study abroad after they graduate, yet they can’t ask the expats what we think about this sort of thing.

Personally, I think they did nothing wrong. They put up something and didn’t know it would be offensive. Then when they were told it was offensive to some of the teachers. They took it down quickly.

I work for a school in China and they are going to have an art festival soon. Today they were setting up some of those pictures where you can stick your face in it and take a photo. They did this to The Last Supper and it’s a very big picture set up right in front of the main gate for all the children to play with. They cut out Jesus’ face and most of his disciples’. All of the expats that work for my school were outraged and told the administration to take it down right away. At first the administration said they would just glue Jesus’ face back on. But this just made people angrier, so they promised to take it down in the morning when they could get some workers to do it.

So what cultural misunderstandings have you experienced? How did you deal with it?

It means “understand” in Chinese, so the name of the website is “Understand Chinese.” It seems like quite a good name to me knowing that now.

No problem and I’m happy to help. Besides the YouTube issue, most everything works well, but some things are a little slow. It takes a little while to load the definitions for characters when they first appear and also for the writing parts. However, this may be on my end. Other than that everything works really well here

I’ve been playing with your site for a bit and I’ve done the placement test and done a few lessons. I really like what you’ve done with the reading and writing.

The writing is very cool especially the way that the it has you writing within a sentence. I wish that the writing was a bit more difficult. I think it overcorrects. This is something that a lot of the apps and sites I’ve used have done. They fix it to some digital character, but it would be great to see my writing not fixed to a character. I’m not sure how possible that is to do, but it would be really cool!

For the reading section, I like the way that you can tap once for the pinyin and twice for the meaning. I like matching the caption to the picture a lot as well. My level is quite low and I haven’t studied very formally, but doing that and piecing together what the scene is made me feel quite confident! However, I think some of the sentences are a bit off (although again, my level is quite low, I’m not quite sure). Also an option for typing the answers instead of multiple choice to make it a bit harder would be really great!

Someone else mentioned spaced repetition and I think this is an absolute must for your site. I also think a way to mark characters as not well known or well known would be an excellent feature as well and would help with the spaced repetition.

It would also be nice to see grammar explanations for certain words. There were a few characters that obviously changed the sentence in some way that I didn’t understand and having a good, proper explanation instead of just showing the definition would be really great!

I also liked the media section quite a lot. That’s a good idea and I like how it shows you the percentage you should be able to understand. However, I think that you should find a different way to show the videos than just linking to YouTube since it’s blocked in China and I needed a vpn to watch them. I know that this is a pretty small thing, but it would certainly help me to use that section more often.

I hope this helps! I’m planning on using the site more and practicing more with it. I like it quite a lot so far. Also an iOS app would be much appreciated haha!

    Edit: added a bit more

I saw Annihilation (2018) last night. I went in expecting a typical action sci-fi movie and instead got a beautiful, weird ass movie starring interesting female characters (or at least more interesting than most female characters in action movies). The setting was beautiful and creepy. The plot was definitely better than most sci-fi thriller movies. Overall, I highly recommend it

I think I developed this fear when I was a kid. We had a gecko that we would feed crickets to. I remember going to the pet store and seeing where they had all the crickets and how they crawled and jump over everything. Just so gross!

In my hometown in Illinois, US, they were tested on the first Tuesday of every month. They are now used as tornado alarms, but I believe they were originally used as an air raid alarms or something like that during the 50s and 60s.

I currently live in China and although they may have such a system in here, I've never heard it tested or anything.
