Share a link to a cover song with an unusual instrument!
A bit over a week ago, I posted share a link to a happy song and it seemed like fun, so how about we play again?
The “iron chef” ingredient this time is that it should be a cover song with an unusual instrument. (How you interpret that is up to you.)
Ground rules:
- One song per comment, so we can vote for them individually.
- One top-level comment per user, so pick your favorite song.
- If you want to post more than one song, reply to yourself to add more comments.
Toto - Africa on musical tesla coils
Blue Monday - Orkestra Obsolete
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb on the carillon (bell tower)
Needs more of that accordion in the mix :-)
But regarding the original, how is it that it has 100 million views?

My personal favorite Rasputin related viral video:

Obligatory Finnish Bluegrass cover of The Trooper
And Bach Chaconne on Nyckleharpa/Nordic Keyharp
Europe - The Final Countdown (Bandura and Accordion)
Daft Punk - "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" (Many Trombones)
Anything with the FLOPPOTRON
It’s so hard to choose just one cover with floppotron, but Mr Roboto on Floppotron feels particularly appropriate. I’d recommend checking out the whole channel though
No really, pick one you like!
I was so excited to share floppotron that I totally missed the ground rules haha. I’ll edit my top level comment with one song.
I don't blame you for initially breaking the rules, since I love FLOPPOTRON as well (see: search?q=floppotron) and so would also be hard pressed to pick a favorite too. :P
However if it came down to it, Sweet Dream (Eurythmics cover) would probably be what I choose as my favorite, with Blue Monday (New Order cover) and Tainted Love (Soft Cell cover) a close 2nd/3rd, since I have listened to those 3 the most out of all of them. 80s music just seems to fit the FLOPPOTRON aesthetic and sounds so well!
Here are a couple of dudes doing a bit of Stravinksy's Rite of Spring on melodica. Sounds pretty damn good! They have other covers, as well, and have gone through the trouble of costuming and back-dropping each one. Not bad, fellas.
@skybrian, you might enjoy this: some of Stravinksy's Petrushka on accordion. Now... I recall there being a live video of a duo doing a take on this piece (and being thoroughly impressed), but I can't seem to find it. However, this recorded version exists.
Yeah, the Melodica Men are good musicians, but honestly their gimmicks seem a bit much sometimes; it makes me feel like I'm watching a cartoon for little kids and I'd rather they just played it straight. Isn't playing melodicas gimmicky enough?
Is there a trend towards the more cartoony side among professional YouTube and Twitch artists? An accordionist I like moved quite a bit in that direction compared to his early stuff. I guess they gotta make a living.
On the other hand, there are other artists like OK Go and Pomplamoose that I like. Maybe I prefer more tasteful gimmicks? (But then again I like Weird Al, so no, that's not it.)
I like the Petrushka! Thanks.
Honestly, when I posted that link... that was the first I heard of ‘em (the Melodica Men)! Just happened upon their videos while lookin for that Stravinsky accordion bit. I definitely can see the “children’s show” aspect (which doesn’t bug me much, as I am a man-child, after-all)... but I guess I just respect the commitment/effort.
Yeah, I know them because I play melodica as well as accordion and sometimes their stuff is posted to r/melodica.
Melodicas are cheap and fun and fit in a carry-on. I'm also teaching my mother to play melodica over video chat.
Also, this Rough Fields interpretation of Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians that utilizes a buncha folk instruments. I kinda prefer this version to the standard instrumentation!
Reptilia - The Strokes as covered by Punch Brothers, a quintet of violin, upright base, banjo, mandolin and guitar.
I think Punch Brothers could probably adapt anything and make it sound really great.
Seasick Steve - Diddley bow.
