    Hi guys,

I just joined Tildes, and this is my first post. I love the idea of the site, and I'm looking forward to spending a lot of time here!

In any event, I wanted to share an article I recently wrote about drinking additional water and its effect on weight loss outcomes. It seemed like everything I read about weight loss always recommended drinking large amounts of water as a diet aid, but these claims were only rarely backup up with citations. I have been on a low calorie diet since March, so this is a topic I was both personally interested in and unable to find a good non-technical source for. So after doing some research, I decided to write it up as the first article for my personal site.

I hope that this is not seen as self-promotion, as the site is not monetized in any way, and I receive no benefit from additional traffic there. Everything there is Creative Commons licensed. I just wanted to share.

    Feedback is welcome!

The article doesn't directly address the psychological benefits of using zero-calorie beverages as a distraction from eating, but I suspect this is helpful for a large % of people.

I make an effort to only drink water because it seems like one of lowest effort ways to improve my health. Sugary drinks are very bad for your teeth, alcoholic drinks contain a lot of calories, and caffeinated drinks are bad for my sleep schedule (and it's easy to become reliant on them). Obviously it's not a silver bullet, but it's a pretty easy thing to do and it's one less variable affecting my health.

That makes a lot of sense. The number one thing that research of the kind I looked at seemed to focus on was the beneficial effects of replacing caloric drinks with water. And there is not much question that this is an effective strategy for weight loss. It is not entirely clear to me that water is a healthier overall choice than, for instance, black coffee or unsweetened tea, but that is very hard question to answer and subject to a ton of caveats on the individual level. And way beyond the scope of my knowledge.

I tried to look a bit beyond the "replacement" effect in my article because it seemed like researchers were using this as low-hanging fruit to avoid the harder questions... such as if drinking additional water over the daily recommended amounts actually does anything for weight loss.

Interesting, I was just thinking about my water intake today after two weeks of intermittent fasting and too much mate (1-2L a day) and not enough water (hard to squeeze it in when you're sucking on 2L of caffeinated leaf juice). I guess I can sort of tick that off on my list of concerns for now, and just focus on hydrating better.

It is a bit of a myth that caffeine-containing drinks are dehydrating or do not contribute as much to daily water intake. If you're interested in the details, you can check out this review as an example:

      Caffeine, Electrolyte-Balance Review

with this relevant quote from the discussion:

A variety of investigations have been reviewed spanning more than 75 yr. The evidence indicates that consuming a moderate level of caffeine results in a mild increase of urine production. Although this diuresis may (240-642 mg of caffeine) or may not (<240 mg) be significantly greater than a control fluid (0 mg of caffeine), there is no evidence to suggest that moderate caffeine intake (<456 mg) induces chronic dehydration or negatively affects exercise performance, temperature regulation, and circulatory strain in a hot environment. Caffeinated fluids contribute to the daily human water requirement in a manner that is similar to pure water.

That's interesting. I guess it means I don't really need to change much in the hydration department, either, since between the liquids I consume I'm getting my water in.
