It's an inspirational piece, but I'm getting caught on how she kept being volunteered for things she didn't want to do. E.g., she refused that initial Girl Scouts position three times.
I've just got tunnel vision on how that sounds similar to being voluntold to take on additional responsibility at work, and it's causing me to experience some cognitive dissonance.
What's interesting to me is the degree to which she, once put in positions of authority, then assiduously worked to distribute that responsibility back to the people who were closer to the issues....

I'm not going to say that she didn't work hard, but she also didn't try to just shoulder the whole load that the world handed her. And at the same time, she made the world a much better place through having been put into positions of power. I think the key thing is that, at least in the anecdotes in the article, she never took on responsibility without also having the power to make the changes that she thought were needed. Responsibility without the power to change is just suffering, and she didn't seem to stand for that.
