So... because Texas is one of the largest states, a trait that is evenly distributed among the population has a higher absolute value there? Shocked. Shocked I tell you. Of course Texas has the second most LGBTQ+ people after California, it has the second most people after California.

Regardless of how banal the actual statistics are, it's helpful to remind people that they're not alone. Even in places where persecution is so unrelenting, the people are still there.

According to a new report from the LGBTQ-rights advocacy organization Human Rights Campaign, 12 percent of U.S. adults, or about 25.6 million people, identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or gender diverse. The report found that 12.54 percent of Texans, about 2,243,590 people, identify as LGBTQ+, meaning the Lone Star State has one of the largest LGBTQ+ populations in the country.

    ...

Texas ranks among the top 15 states in terms of pure percentage of LGBTQ+ adults and is second behind only California among raw numbers of LGBTQ+ adults.

    ...

According to HRC's report, Texas has the largest LGBTQ+ adult population in the South. The South's LGBTQ+ population as a whole is estimated at about 36 percent of all adults in the new survey.

It's hard to understand how this state could simultaneously be so loving and accepting on an individual basis but so hateful and cruel at a statewide political level.

I mean, this is true at the national level too. The self-perpetuating power structures are real and pervasive without trying to minimize the importance of lgbtqia+ rights, them are used as a distraction to keep us focused on left vs right and not on the class power struggle.

..."state" as personification is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that statement: fourty years ago, texas was trending progressive by comparison to its established demographics, and that population mostly stuck around; cruelty just became the brand for the group who've since siezed power and attracted a lot of bad actors from out-of-state...

...political oppression and voter suppression are writ large in texas so i'm not convinced that its political narrative reflects popular temperament...
