I have not read the original article this one is replying to, but it just sounds like a Christian calling for a civil discourse in a inherently bigoted debate. Scott sounds like someone who wants to have their cake and eat it too, and it's great that someone is calling her out for it. You can't be nice about denying someone fundamental rights, it just makes you condescending.

Ultimately I wish that the institution of marriage should be completely divorced (heh) from the institution of the church. Many countries have done so, but age-old bigoted rules of the church still influence us today.

That being said, whenever I question if something is bigoted (if I can't immediately tell) I like to play the game popularized by the fun little subreddit r/menkampf, which takes posts, usually from Tumblr, with bigoted language towards men or caucasians, and exchanges words to make these posts about jews/women/black people etc. instead to expose how clearly bigoted they are.

Imagine today you'd start a conversation about forbidding black people to marry. Clearly bigoted.
As is this conversation about same-sex marriage. Christians are just being dicks and hiding behind tradition. I'm only glad that the church continues to erode in popularity, like a mountain being grinded to dust by the rivers of time.

As Nietzsche said: God is dead. In another context perhaps, but who cares.

The mormon church (I'm exmormon) is full of that kind of "kind" bigot thinking. "Don't call us homophobes. We love the gays now! We just think they need to keep those sinful impulses under control...

This was linked in a thread on r/lgbt and I thought it was the perfect kind of article for Tildes as well. Very briefly, Fred Clark argues quite simply that you cannot simultaneously deny people...

Very briefly, Fred Clark argues quite simply that you cannot simultaneously deny people their basic human rights and also be nice about it. You do not get to be nice!

Halee Gray Scott is unfair. And thus she is also unkind.
