Trans people, particularly trans women, and amongst them particularly poor trans women of colour, have always been subjected to disproportionate levels of murderous violence, and that violence was already unlikely to inspire much public outrage. The British media are systematically building a climate in which such violence is likely to be applauded.
For any cis person who identifies as any kind of leftist, and particularly as an antifascist, this is a defining moment. The time to stand with trans people against this murderous climate was yesterday. The second-best time is now.

Something about tabloid journalism in Britain seems even more adept at ginning up hysteria over nonsense than here in America. I remember in the 2000s they had gotten all lathered up over pedophilia hysteria and ruined random mens' lives over it. It got bad enough to where fathers were scared to take their kids to the playground without a woman around. It's hard to overstate how noxious of an influence Rupert Murdoch and his media holdings have done to the anglophone world. And nobody seems to have figured out a way to interrupt the loop they create with this stuff.
Most people I know are just hoping his empire collapses with his death and that that comes soon. With the power all of those papers hold it's hard to see any other solution.

I think the culture is pretty much set so the empire will carry on without him. It's probably pretty much on auto-pilot at this point. Maybe once he's gone the infighting will tear it apart so we...

Maybe once he's gone the infighting will tear it apart so we get several different types of bullshit or less effectively managed bullshit funnels.
I’m wondering how people not in the community can tell what’s going on. When newspapers can’t be trusted on trans issues, what are more reliable sources?

There are a lot of great trans voices out there speaking about this kind of thing - Julia Serano comes to mind, but there are many others. The other thing is, at least in my opinion, you can never...

The other thing is, at least in my opinion, you can never trust the media's framing. Generally they do not actually lie, but they often fail to report all relevant facts and frame things in a "two-sided" way when, in fact, there are few people who actually fall on one of the two sides (think climate change, for instance). This is not limited to queer issues, and we need to apply critical thinking to all news coverage.
I would like to point out that this kind of behavior is also extremely present on Tildes, especially on threads where people are 'just asking questions' of minorities. If you consider yourself an...

Thanks. I see that Julia Serano has written some interesting articles that seem like useful context. I haven't seen anything she's written about what's going on in the UK, though?

I could have sworn she wrote something about the last BBC thing; I'll dig through my bookmarks and see if I can find it. In the meantime, Florence Ashley's older stuff on the Tavistock decision is...

Is this in direct response to the recent BBC article which painted trans people as sexual predators?
I think it's in response to the larger trend of such occurrences.
