Interesting, I wish the article had more content about the culture, language, and/or people. It feels a bit like it was written by an AI because the article has an arc to it with an intro, content, and conclusion, but not a ton of meat other than that which touches directly the couple of land disputes it mentions. Better to be informed than not, though, and it was interesting to learn about the community.

I follow a few TikTok creators that talk about Gullah culture from within. Unfortunately due to the nature of TikTok searching them up now is annoying, but I'll snag handles and come back and edit...

Unfortunately due to the nature of TikTok searching them up now is annoying, but I'll snag handles and come back and edit when they next show up in my algorithm. It's worth doing a search though if you want to learn more!

I believe Sunn m'Cheaux is on Tiktok, but I watch him on YT. He's an instructor of the Gullah language at Harvard and has a lot of great content regarding both Gullah/Geechee and language in general.

The distinct Gullah-Geechee people, located near the coast of South Carolina, have survived slavery, the Civil War and Jim Crow. But in recent decades, the historic Black community has been threatened by gentrifiers and commercial developers who have taken their land. In a struggle that most Americans have not noticed, the Gullah-Geechee continue to fight the political and legal battles needed to preserve as many of their homes and as much of their culture as they can.
