Personally, I enjoy giving irrelevant answers to the busybody I run into at least once a week, from the classic "I'm going to iron my dog" (more of an excuse, but still great for befuddling), to the recent favorite: "This human suit is chafing and I need to remove it to apply baby powder."

Comment on Madison Reeve explains why she quit Linus Tech Tips (CW: self harm, slurs, sexual harassment) in ~tech
albinanigans I've reached that point as well. I first came across LTT/LMG and stuck around because when they talked about Tech Stuff, their fun (read: entertaining) energy kept me interested. I came for that...I've reached that point as well.
I first came across LTT/LMG and stuck around because when they talked about Tech Stuff, their fun (read: entertaining) energy kept me interested. I came for that PC Built with Wish Parts video someone mentioned downstream (and later, when Linus was Smarthousing his home), and ended up staying for the tech reviews-- even though I was unfamiliar with a lot of the aspects.
I began side-eyeing them when the warranty fiasco went down, then Linus' stance on unions. Additionally, I became interested in other tech news outlets. At first it was for variety's sake, but then I've been wanting benchmarks and jargon just given to me straight-- that's how I came across Gamers Nexus. I also began following The Linux Experiment because Linus' foray into Linux left me wanting to learn more about it. I rolled my eyes at The Hard R Incident-- yeah, that tracks; Linus would be that out of touch. Eventually, I just stopped following LTT because it wasn't Doing It for me anymore.
Then this shit hit the fan.
I am frankly appalled at how Billet Labs and Madison was treated, and I now have an even deeper appreciation for outlets like Gamers Nexus-- I wouldn't have caught any of LTT's blunders at all! Luckily, I wasn't depending on them to influence my buying of tech. And I am disappointed in Linus' response to the valid criticism, but I can't say I'm surprised.

Like @llehsadam, I spend a lot more time here than Reddit. It boiled down to two things, for me:
- I only keep tabs on the subs I really care about. My community support network needs are also met elsewhere, further reducing that to the single digits... on one hand. I pop in for recent news/happenings/events and call it a day. I've also grown accustomed to getting my meme supply elsewhere.
- When I'm not just reading the comments (and the majority of them are long and thoughtful!), I'm actually engaging a lot more, too. Who knew making yourself think/write more than a smartass quip took up more time than shitposting? ;)

I was reluctant to try again with another similar series.
But then I got the first 3 books of a series for Christmas: Brandon Sanderson's The Stormlight Archive. And, the gifter knew I greatly enjoyed the Mistborn series, so it was likely it would have gone over better.
And it did. I'm just amazed at how this author writes their characters, and his worldbuilding.
While it took me a good year and change to get through the first 2 books due to scheduling and accessibility (still on the third as of this comment!) I'm glad I read when I could and stuck with it. I'm in awe and thoroughly enjoying it.

I had no delusions of ever "winning" this protest against Reddit. Having gone through similar upheavals with Digg and Livejournal, I just packed up my stuff and left. Once they start chasing the money hard there is really no convincing them, and it was only a matter of my preferences and ideals at that point.
Reddit is... Not Quite Dead, but certainly a shadow of its former self. I daresay it's even Too Big to Fail. But let's see how things fare in a few months. It may be too big to fail on the business metric they care about, but their cultural fall from grace may be spectacular.

Comment on The historic Gullah-Geechee community is fighting to retain its land and culture in South Carolina in ~life
albinanigans The distinct Gullah-Geechee people, located near the coast of South Carolina, have survived slavery, the Civil War and Jim Crow. But in recent decades, the historic Black community has been threatened by gentrifiers and commercial developers who have taken their land. In a struggle that most Americans have not noticed, the Gullah-Geechee continue to fight the political and legal battles needed to preserve as many of their homes and as much of their culture as they can.

When it's so easy to read your own tone into text, emoticons and emojis help get the writer's intended tone across. As to why Reddit/some parts of the web had a frothing hate for emoticons? Because people also used them to be frivolous and silly when communicating, and we can only be serious on the Internet at all times. :eyeroll:
In short, I dig 'em for both reasons. You'll pry the "XD" emote out of my cold, dead hands.
EDIT to actually answer the question put forth:
I don't think so; we just use them sparingly, possibly due to leaning toward more serious tones.
