I’m really hoping he doesn’t agree to any of that. It would be way better for him to just quit than meet with Sinclair or donate to Turning Point

Despite Kimmel’s return, it is not immediately clear if his show will be available across the entire country. Sinclair, for its part, had said that it would not go back to running Kimmel’s show on its stations until the late night host apologized for his comments, met with Sinclair representatives, and made a donation to Turning Point, the organization that Kirk founded.

Donating to Turning Point is an insane stipulation to make. I'm staggered by it. Kirk was a political activist, and Turning Point specifically advocates for conservative political views to be taught in American public schools. I feel confident Kimmel would not do such a thing, but goddamn. That's... really something.

The comments that he was suspended for didn't even have anything to do with Kirk himself, it was about the right's response to the events when the shooter didn't fit the narrative they want and Trump himself. Kimmel has numerous times already denounced what happened, said it's a tragedy, and can't fathom how anyone is celebrating this event.

This request is just asinine and political posturing.

IANAL, but I believe Disney/ABC can sue uncooperative affiliates for breach of contract.

It's too late for us. We've been prepping the kids on why their Disney shows won't be available any more. Like Target, the ship has sailed at this point. The C-suites have shown what they value. It was one thing for Sinclair to be Sinclair, and that's before the whole favor-currying for their monopoly merger. But capitulation from Disney was completely unnecessary and they did it anyway. It was pathetic, and it's only the latest in a long list of pathetic moves from them.

The official statement from the article:

“Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country,” ABC parent The Walt Disney Company said in a statement Monday. It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”

Corp speak as always, but i'm realllly curious what the real conversations were like. Namely with the FCC. There's no doubt this was done because all the legal precedent in the world won't matter if the FCC just nukes them and says "see you in court for the next 2+ years".

Everyone involved knows Jimmy didn't do shit that was even bad taste, just straight up standard inoffensive opening act material poking fun at the sitting president. The real sign off had to be the FCC saying they wouldn't just rip away their license.

If I understand though, it's not ABC that would lose its license, it's the local broadcast stations that are ABC affiliates. So it's a much more indirect threat that would hurt Sinclair and such directly, because then they lose all affiliation and may not be able to switch to a different market. Plus I think the affiliate station owners were pending a merger that needed approval? It's been messy.

Lawrence O’Donnell: Trump wants us to talk about Jimmy Kimmel. So we’ll talk about Trump & Jeffrey Epstein

This is a 9 minute video from September 17 which has a lot of good points related to Kimmel’s suspension and several other points about media consolidation, the Epstein scandal, and a longing for boring politics. There are so many scandals and such insanity around Trump that it’s hard to focus on the essential problems.

    • It’s not just that Trump is trying to punish his enemies, but it’s effective due to corruption you get from only having a handful of media sources.
    • It’s not just that Prince Andrew got no punishment, but that the Royal Family has associated itself with another close friend off Epstein.

MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell describes how the British government, “in its idiotic attempt to co-opt Donald Trump through flattery, has put their King in the center of the Epstein scandal with Donald Trump sitting at the table” but not former Ambassador Peter Mandelson or Prince Andrew.

I wonder how much this has to do with their stock price. It was down a few percent following his suspension. Now after this news it seems to be rebounding.

Disney's org chart is absolutely insane. They're practically put together by duct tape and wishful thinking. It's astonishing that they manage to put large projects together at all from everything I've heard from non-exec insiders. Somehow Disney+ is a really high quality video streaming platform, yet ABC News's website is still at abcnews.go.com, a relic of the "webportal" fad of the late 20th century.

I think that's mixing up cause and effect. It was down a few percent following his suspension because there was a possibility that the US government would take action against ABC/Walt Disney Company. I don't think the stock dropped because Walt Disney lost a valuable IP in Jimmy Kimmel; it dropped because there's a bully looking in their direction.

Now after this news it seems to be rebounding.

The day that Jimmy Kimmel was announced would come back, the 22nd, the stock is still down 1.05% for the day and up 0.02% after-hours (aka, noise).

Voting with your wallet is a nice idea but not one that makes a lick of difference (against large corporations) in 2025, as far as I can tell. Reasons:

        1. They have such a large customer base, and the population is so large, that even organized boycotts are unable to meaningfully move the needle.

        2. These orgs like Disney and ABC are interacting directly with the federal government, serving as a mouthpiece for Trump and trying to appease him. They have larger chessboard priorities than turning a profit. They’re not playing by the typical rules of capitalism.

        3. Life in the digital age is too fast and complex for people to be expected to keeps tabs on the ethics of every company they purchase from, and upend their household budgets and subscriptions every time a company does something wrong. We are exhausted and overwhelmed.

        4. Companies at this size are all full of skeletons in dark closets, and to subject all of them to purity tests would end up isolating yourself from much of the culture. At some point you have to compromise and settle for something less than perfect. It’s a tragedy of modern techno-feudalism, all of us have blood on our hands if you follow the money, and there’s no practical way to avoid it.

Every time I see people talking about a company’s stock price dipping after news like this, I remind myself that it’s just going to bounce back to its previous price (or higher) within a week or so. Seems to be par for the course. The execs know this, and it enables them to do evil things with impunity. However much outrage is generated in the moment, it’ll all blow over by the next news cycle. I can’t think of a single example in the modern era when customer backlash to a terrible company actually tanked the company. I don’t believe that’s actually possible.

If people actually cared, it would make a difference. So instead of telling people it doesn't matter, tell them to take action. Trump is in office because enough people cared to cast their vote that way, and a lot more didn't care and stayed home.

Still good to boycott for moral reasons in cases like this where you don't need to do a ton of investigating to know where you stand. And simply avoid the pitfalls of point 4 by pirating.
