Man - here in Canada this seems like such old hat. Hearing this reminded me of the time that I heard how tough it is to get an abortion in New Zealand.

Yeah, it looks like Canada is really ahead of a lot of other countries when it comes to this stuff.

We are, but it's a delicate thing. The modern conservative movement is foaming at the mouth to tear down the social justice wins over the past few decades in Canada, too.

Lefty's drive to turn over a history of colonialism overnight pushed conservatives into the crazy corner and now they want revenge. It's crazy, but that's what extreme polarization gets us.

I hope Canada gets better in the coming years rather than worse, but as a US American myself I can understand where the pessimism comes from.

Change doesn't happen over night and as much as I hate saying this, it's important that those of us calling for change don't do so at the total expense of the tradition and convention that righty aligns themselves with.

As a proudly multi ethnic, multi cultural society, members of the Canadian leadership and cultural class has done their best to distance themselves from the country's roots and former identity as part of the commonwealth.

It's driven many of the greatest and boomer generations totally mad, and rightly so in my opinion.

I think MLK Jr has an excellent point in his "Letter from a Birmingham Jail" when he said:

First, I must confess that over the last few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season."

The other thing to consider is that "righty," as you call him, will bellow at any advancement in social justice. It doesn't matter how modest you set your goals, the reactionary will take it as a direct existential threat and behave accordingly. There's absolutely no reason to suppose that humility and incremental advancements will be received with any less vehemence than rapid change.

We saw this in the US with the small steps toward inclusiveness and empathy we made in the 90s: even those half measures were met with a huge rise of propaganda from the right. The rhetorical tactics they employed then have only been refined since then, and the siloing of conservatives into echo chambers begun then only led to greater resistance and coordination later on, when more substantive changes were attempted.

"You're either with us or against us" is a bullshit rhetorical move, and I'm not trying to imply that here. As that asinine movie quote goes, "only the Sith deal in absolutes," and besides, I'm not currently unjustly sitting in a jail cell in Alabama. It's not for me to say who's an ally or an enemy. But of one thing I'm certain: believing reactionaries when they claim their problem is with the speed of change and not the fact of it is foolish.
