Back in my day, you could min/max stats in video games. Now I keep seeing mouth breathers calling people out for "goymaxxing". I would be willing to bet my life that anyone who has ever said this is A) not jewish and B) regularly spends time on 4chan (the site filled with child porn and gore, that was apparently partially inspired by a conversation between moot and Jeffrey Epstein).
"Looksmaxxing" is pure cancer as well. I'm pretty sure the venn diagram of people who say looksmaxxing and goymaxxing is 2 concentric circles. I watched a video about Clavicular a few weeks ago. The fact that there are people like that in the world, and that they are POPULAR, makes me wish for some sort of nuclear Armageddon. Maybe I'm overreacting though...
Goymaxxing is new to me. Without further context, it sounds like something an antisemite would pride themselves on. Which yeah sounds like the same crowd as looksmaxxers and 4chan. I was born...

I was born cantankerous so I can't tell you if you're overreacting though, but yeah, I feel similarly about ___maxxing and other popular forms of dumbing down vocabulary.
Regardless of the tastefulness of this particular example (and yeah, "goymaxxing" seems extremely transparently antisemitic, ew), new slang is not "dumbing down" vocabulary and never has been....

That's not how language and language change works, and the idea is a pervasive myth that linguists actively work to combat in the general public.
Maybe I should start a Maxmaxxing Tiktok channel and start demonstrating and evangelizing all the *maxxing trends simultaneously... Shirley I'd be a bajillionaire with all the world's drip

Surprised the author didn't touch on it, although they touchminimized on it, but replace every mention you see of 'maxxer', (looksmaxxer, adhdmaxxer, optimaxxer) and their ilk in the wild, with the word 'extremist' and you've explained the entirety of the early 20th century, and now the early 21st century.
Perhaps it's the cycle of the century, where you want to be a new era, a new age, a break from the past just as the numbered years are a break, and you begin a new era of extremism, in looks, politics, being in general. You want to stand out, you want to an individual that leads a community, the head of the crop, the leader of a changed world, even if that world is only the one you see from within your bedroom walls. You have to be an extremist to change things, to be different, to stand above. You have to be a maxxer in some regard, it's just that what you focus on is just as important as what you don't focus on, and it is very hard to stand out when you are so 'normalized'. We live in an attention economy, and the maxxer is the one that will always win12.
Sadly, I knew of most of the modern terms, and yet I was thrown for a loop with some of the more medieval era terms used throughout, interesting dichotomy of the two. Enjoyable, upsetting, and terrifying article. Thanks @Bet for posting.
1. I am of course, only being partially facetious here. 2. I would know, I had over a million followers across a dozen blogs, as a teenager, before I 'retired' from social media and gave it all up nearly a decade ago...
I consider specialization in all forms as a 'maxxing' variant. So yeah, our entire societies are all about maxxing, even when it's not for individual identity but also for advancing your career.

The acceleration of contemporary life also plays a role in this lack of being. The society of laboring and achievement is not a free society. It generates new constraints. Ultimately, the dialectic of master and slave does not yield a society where everyone is free and capable of leisure, too. Rather, it leads to a society of work in which the master himself has become a laboring slave. In this society of compulsion, everyone carries a work camp inside. This labor camp is defined by the fact that one is simultaneously prisoner and guard, victim and perpetrator. One exploits oneself. It means that exploitation is possible even without domination.

I can only imagine that this take arises due to a lack of empathy, or a poor understanding of history. At the very least, presence in the "can you take it down a notch, gay people" opinion space...
Although it’s pursued with less fervour now, it’s still possible to isolate and extend your sexuality or ethnic background, while the rest of you withers away. The aspects you extend don’t have to be strengths; it’s actually encouraged to specialise in being in some way incapable, which is how you end up with public spaces covered in bad poetry about having ADHD.

We'll all be maxxmogged by your content. Can't wait!
I hope your name is Max, that would be the ticket to glory
