This topic is pretty close to my heart. I don't wear much makeup, but was absolutely forbidden to when I was in school. And it included nail polish and "fancy" jeans too. My dad basically saw me even wanting to as some sort of moral issue, like painting my nails meant I was too vain and valued looking pretty over study. He didn't see it as self expression, which really was what it was for me.

I would assume by allowing it as a parent, you can see what they plan to do and kind of guide them rather than them sneaking it to school and putting it on in the bathroom with zero advice or tips.
I like the idea of enabling children to make decisions like this for themselves too. If for nothing else, just seems like something that they shouldn't have to hide.
