Bumping this back up to mention that Troy Woody and Mir Islam had a court appearance in Manila today, but it doesn't sound like anything too major happened other than the revelation that they don't even have a lawyer (and the witness identified them and the victim, but that wasn't unexpected).

Sounds like the next stage won't happen until October now.

I found this pretty chilling to read. Like so many stories like this, it felt like there were a lot of opportunities for things to go right, but everything just went wrong. The reason seems to be Mr. Islam, who certainly sounds like a sociopath.

Poor girl - I feel terrible for her and for her family. I hope they get some justice.

I want to know where their parents were while they were 13 and 15 and stealing credit cards and identities. Islam was able to groom them into sociopaths as well.

Also, am I going crazy? I could have sworn this article was submitted here a few days ago, but I can't find that submission now. Although maybe I just read it directly on buzzfeed and not through Tildes. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Either way, it was a fascinating, scary and depressing read. Hopefully those two little shits don't manage to weasel their way out of facing justice like they have in the past.

I posted it a couple days ago, but it didn't get any comments or anything, so I deleted it today when it looked like this one was getting more traction.

Ah, gotcha. Thanks. It was bugging me since I could have sworn I saw it on Tildes, but I wasn't entirely sure. :P

There's the rub. I didn't see it here, before, but it was probably on reddit, so you may have read it there.

to me, it seems like Woody is even more complicit than Islam for manipulating Masters into coming to the Philippines with him in the first place. yikes, what a horrible and gut wrenching story....
