I really enjoy Philosophy Tube's work lately, even if Ollie is going for a lot more of a theatrical kind of style (which seems appropriate, given his major (and I think he still acts) was in theatre IIRC).

This episode honestly taught me a whole lot about sex work, and the best course of action. The one thing it didn't teach me was the usual -- if we really want to know what's going on, we need to be communicating with front line workers and customers.

What's best for protecting the consumer and the sex worker? These are the first and foremost considerations we ought to take in mind when either legalizing or decriminalizing (which I have always preferred, even with cannabis). This is an area I feel like government's are consistently doing wrong, even when businesses are getting better in that area.

Great video as usual, and I'd love to see some debate or discussion in the comments. This isn't an area I am particularly educated in (even after a 45 minute long video), so it's fantastic seeing some other perspectives.

Also, to OP: is your username saying you like your earl gray tea cold? I mean, you spelled gray right, at least, so I assume you're not a complete monster! ;)

For me, this is actually one of the most interesting developments in video essays. In this specific video, the magician and magic tricks strengthen his point of 'there's a bait and switch going on here'. Well executed metaphorical visuals can drive a point home more effectively, and make it easier to remember.

He seems to be taking cues from Contrapoints, who uses different characters to embody different viewpoints, which also seems like an effective addition over the talking to the camera plus relevant images/screenshots in more straightforward videos.

Both are examples of a sort of "dual coding" which is shown to be an effective didactic tool. Also, if I remember correctly, people tend to remember things better when it's presented in conversation form, as if between actual people.

I believe you're right. It also really goes into Natalie's entire belief that people are convinced by stories. A conversation can be enough to be a story -- conversations are some of the stories...

It also really goes into Natalie's entire belief that people are convinced by stories. A conversation can be enough to be a story -- conversations are some of the stories we share most with others, I'd say. It makes sense that either one can be more effective tools to persuade, convince, or disarm arguments.

generally if you ask sex workers, decriminalization. the rational behind that seems to mostly be that legalization opens up undesirable forms of governmental regulation that ultimately end up fucking over sex workers, while just decriminalizing it more or less allows them to operate as they see necessary while still not having to worry about catching charges or subjecting them to legal mandates.

I find that's the case with most people who choose to be sex workers, but it ignores the silent yet very large number of trafficking victims.

I don't actually prefer my Earl Grey cold. I first used this name on Minecraft, and teaearlgrayhot was taken. I didn't know of the correct spelling at the time.

I'm sure you know this, but just in case, the username is a reference to a popular Jean-Luc Picard phrase. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2IJdfxWtPM

Well, it's not completely superfluous to add "hot" to your order of tea. My partner always puts some cold water with her tea so it's at a temperature you can drink quickly. I like to sip piping hot tea, on the contrary. So maybe the replicators have a "warm" and a "hot" option (where "warm" would be the default, based on Picard needing to specify "hot").
