I'm skeptical of the assertion that $15 minimum wage has a causal link with SF's falling unemployment rate. I mean, I would find Apple building a new office, or a bunch of people making $15/hr...

I mean, I would find Apple building a new office, or a bunch of people making $15/hr moving out of SF because you can't live on that wage there to be more the more likely cause.

I'd like to see research on the percentage of people earning minimum wage that are supporting a family vs how many are people (school age kids or otherwise) just earning some extra spending money. Migrant workers (specifically talking about my experience with people following the onion harvest here) are guaranteed minimum wage despite being paid by how much work they get done. Most of these people make well above minimum wage, but because the farmer has to pay at least minimum wage, they can't hire a slow moving elderly person that doesn't need $15 an hour, but just wants a little extra to help out. I feel like a lot of minimum wage earners pushing for this are going to find out that they're not adding $15/hr value to their company.

I also believe the federal minimum wage needs to be low for the areas where the cost of living is so low that places can't afford to pay that and people can live off less. Some states/counties/cities probably do need to raise their minimum wage as of now, but 15 is high for an across the country number.

I'd much rather see addressed the problem of why people who are trying to support a family are earning minimum wage than to just raise the salary of everyone.
