I feel like this is one of those 'marketed as uplifting but actually a sign of our horrific times' stories. In the scheme of rich people, Lady Gaga is an employee. She won't even notice a change in her quality of life from this donation, which is generous but won't mean she's skipping meals or struggling to balance her budget. How much more good could we do if we just taxed rich people at a reasonable rate?

To further your point, she is using the platform DonorsChoose to fund the classrooms. DonorsChoose was set up specifically to address the fact that teachers in the United States do not have sufficient resources and often spend their own money on supplies. The organization recently passed one million funded projects and has listed projects from 82% of American public schools. They will soon be celebrating their twentieth anniversary.

The only way DonorsChoose can be touted as a success story is on the back of a broken education system. It's not something to praise--it's something that should give us incredible pause.

I agree that it sucks that this has to be done. But I certainly cheer that someone is doing it.
