A Pep Rally is a gathering that occurs typically before a sporting event to "pump up" the crowd, usually associated with high school or middle school. The idea is to get people very excited about whatever thing is about to happen, so that when it's happening, the energy seems higher than it might otherwise be.

This is a normal thing that happens commonly at most schools?

At my highschool, one would happen about once a year before the big football game against our rival school. While I'm not big on "school spirit", it was typically in the middle of the semester when everyone is just kind of exhausted, so its timing was good to have something to break up the monotony.

I honestly don't know how common it is. It's notable that I'm Canadian, and that it's been almost 25 years since high school for me; we don't have quite the same relationship with sports that America does. We did have a pep rally at least once before a sporting event that I recall fairly well. It was pretty similar to the one in this video. It was mostly an excuse to assemble and try to be happy.

It's pretty common in the US. The frequency or exact purpose may vary from region to region, but it's generally before a sporting event with significance, such as VS a nearby rival school, or the Homecoming game, or something. It's both a "pep" rally with the specific purpose of trying to get people excited so that they then show up to the game later, and it also is sometimes an opportunity for some talent-related performances such as cheerleaders, dance crew, marching band, or something similar.

At my high school, they would gather all students and teachers in the gymnasium, cheerleaders would cheer, and sometimes they would make some kind of announcement. I honestly don’t remember much about the content, but I’ve never been into sports, so maybe that’s why. I typically used the time to socialize with my friends.

My high school was much the same. We usually had it the week of our game against the other high school in town (I have to wonder if this has changed, since my hometown gained a third high school since then). Had everyone gathered in the large gym, usually some sort of 'show' type thing involving the cheerleaders and sports teams playing. It was a great excuse to get out of class for an hour or two, or a great excuse to ditch early if it was held at the end of the day. (if you could get out before the security guards locked the parking lot gates-- I remember one time my junior year where my friends and I ditched one, I ended up taking my little Ford Focus off-road down the steep hill that my school's student parking lot was on to get around the gate the SRO had just locked. Luckily I had just gotten my license so my car's plates weren't in the school's systems yet, so no punishment came for me then.)

Just one of those things that are part of the US high school experience.

It says "pep rally" but I have only a vague sense of what the entails. Can someone who has been to an American high school explain? There is nothing equivalent in the UK that I'm aware of. We have sporting events in schools, although they are far less of a big deal at the school/college level, but the impression I have is that a pep rally is something which happens separate to the actual sports bit.

it's something you might do before an event. If you have a big game on Friday, you might have a pep rally at the end of the day on Friday to get people fired up. You might also have pep rallies...

You might also have pep rallies for other events - graduation is one example.

I always thought pep rallies were like “comícios” in Brazil, large events in which politicians talk directly to their enthusiastic fan base. Never been to one myself, I’m not much of an enthusiast.
