I've been thinking about this a lot recently. Ever since (and even before) we've had our kid. It has been really difficult to find people who support free range kid-raising around us and it makes me incredibly sad. Even though we're a 2 minute walking distance from a playground, you never see kids there on their own. Most time your see more parents than kids, and I am worried of what this would mean when my kid is old enough to be able to play unsupervised. But apart from this, one of the biggest challenges to having kids play outside unsupervised is that in suburbia there are no other kids playing outside. Your kid may be allowed to frolick the streets in their own but once they see there are no kids outside to play with they go straight back in. So it's not just a question of how to raise my own kid, it's about finding a place where other parents feel similarly to myself
