I’ve been talking about this movie a bit in my Oscar predictions. Looks fantastic, very middle-brow, right up my alley.

Hollywood loves movies about movies, but isn't it a bit early to predict an Oscar before you've seen the film?

Predictions are made for a variety of different reasons like subject matter (biopics, social issues, Hollywood etc), prestige talent who have had success with Oscar’s (in this case Sam Mendes, Olivia Colman, Roger Deakins, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross).

Last year in early predictions I predicted stuff like King Richard, Belfast, Don’t Look Up, West Side Story, Licorice Pizza getting nominated for Picture long before we saw any footage from them.

Eh. I suppose it's possible to have reasonable success making predictions based on things like subject matter and actors the Academy likes. I just think it's a kind of superficial and vacuous way...

Eh. I suppose it's possible to have reasonable success making predictions based on things like subject matter and actors the Academy likes. I just think it's a kind of superficial and vacuous way of talking about movies based on nothing but facts that can be gleaned from trailers and Wikipedia/IMDB. I don't mean to criticize you personally, but I just don't understand what kind of enjoyment or intellectual stimulation can be had from speculating about awards that are supposed to be about art, without having actually engaged with that art in any meaningful way. It's almost literally like judging a book by its cover.

It’s more like betting on a game, rather than an intellectual exercise. It’s not the only way I watch movies, I’ve done heavy analysis of cinema, I’ve watched a lot of classics. I’ve read a lot about the history of film. I can talk about filmmakers like Jacque Demy and Frank Capra and their use of camera movement and all that stuff. I’ve engaged with art in that way.

It’s just a fun thing to do, like putting a bet down on a horse race. It’s my hobby within my hobby. It’s not as niche as it sounds either.
