Midweek Movie Free Talk
Have you watched any movies recently you want to discuss? Any films you want to recommend or are hyped about? Feel free to discuss anything here.
Please just try to provide fair warning of spoilers if you can.
I watched Aftersun and I kept expecting something absolutely horrible... a sort of central trauma... but nothing. It was just a nice little movie that everybody should watch.
It is pretty depressing though.
my relief and absolute joy when nothing truly awful happens to her overshadowed everything sad.
but yeah, a bit depressing.
So I’ve been looking at my past top 10 lists from when I was a teenager. And decided to update them as I did 2016’s. Instead of doing them all side-by-side I’ll just put in parenthesis what was formerly number 1, what’s new on the list etc.
This starts from 2013 and ends in 2019 when I turned 20.
2013:
Out of the list: Instructions Not Included, Lone Survivor, Prisoners, Bad Grandpa, The World’s End
2014:
Out of the list: Guardians of the Galaxy, Godzilla, Selma, Neighbors
2015:
Out of the list: Inside Out, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Kingsman, Tangerine
2017:
Out of the list: Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2,
2018:
2018 was the year I watched the least amount of movies, primarily because I was the busiest I ever was with school. So that’s why there are so many “new entries.” As I watched a lot of these shortly after (like in the beginning of 2020).
Out of the list: Blockers, Ralph Breaks the Internet, Bumblebee, Black Panther, Annihilation
2019:
Out of the list: Rocketman, Yesterday, Long Shot

Was alright. It’s like a fast food type of movie. 90 minutes or however long, the whole theater was laughing, not very scary but that wasn’t the point.
It’s weird this got the acclaim it got. It has similar critical reception to like Dune, or from this past year The Menu and Nope. So it’s just weird to think about. Like what about this movie do film critics think is so much better than something like Babylon, or comparing it to a similar movie Violent Night.
Also I watched (and re-watched) a couple more movies from 2022 and I wasn’t super happy with my top 10. So here’s the updated one:
I was waiting to watch Glass Onion with my wife on a date night, but found out that she had watched it without me, so I caught up on it. I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of it, but nothing more than the rewards one could have for being observant. The crime is certainly one you can solve via observation, even when you don't know exactly what the crimes even are, which is frequently not true in whodunnits.
I love the cast, enjoyed the twists and turns, and overal give this a solid 9/10. It's probably not for everyone, but it was definitely for me.
Oh man that is so funny.
I picked up The Complete Jacques Tati Criteron Collection. So far I've watched Jour de fête and Monsieur Hulot's Holiday. I really enjoy how these movies find humor in the mundane. I'm looking forward to Mon Oncle and Playtime.
