Pre-article take: Because kids movies will draw in families, and families don't have time to cram in an opening weekend, and with younger kids it's nice having a mostly-empty theater where you can let the 3 year old run around in the aisles when they get bored.

Post-article take: I still stand by my thesis, but thoughts on the article itself:

Toy Story was also somewhat revolutionary. Elemental exists in an otherwise void of movies for that age group right now. So long as theaters only have 1-2 kids movies at a time, those movies will see a turnaround over time unless they are truly terrible.

I'm hoping to take my kids next week. We'll see if its still sticking around in the matinees.

Glad to hear this movie ended up doing better. Based on the reviews I've seen of it, it seemed like a charming little movie, and I had like the artstyle of it ever since the trailers came. Maybe...

Definitely seems to be the case. Oppenheimer will soon pass The Little Mermaid to be the fifth highest grossing film of the year domestically. Making the top 5 films: Barbie, Mario, Spider-Verse,...

Making the top 5 films: Barbie, Mario, Spider-Verse, Guardians, and Oppenheimer have multipliers above three (meaning they made more than three times their opening weekends). Even The Little Mermaid has a multiplier above three.

Last year the only films with a multiplier above three was Top Gun and Avatar, with Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and Jurassic World all being below three. Those multipliers in the 2 area were very common pre-pandemic. So this year feels like a return to the leggier days of Hollywood. If only just slightly.

Isn't that worse for Hollywood, since movie theaters get a bigger cut on movies that are past a certain age, and the movie studio gets their biggest cut on opening weekend?

That's a common thought that's based on outdated information. Studios and theaters now negotiate a flat rate for the films entire run.
