Hadn't seen Macaulay for a while. I hope there's a botw with him soon. And Pee-Wee really is a sound film, and perfect from start to finish. I hope it stands the test of time so much that people in the future will look at it like a lightning-in-a-bottle type of movie, as we do now with Willy Wonka, Ghostbusters, etc.

And agreed about Pee-Wee being a sound film. I even said similar in the comments of the last video I posted about it:

I rewatched Pee-wee's Big Adventure a few months ago after Paul Reubens died. And while I'm a bit biased since it was one of my favorite zany/slapstick/immature comedy movies growing up (along with Ernest Goes to Jail), IMO it actually has held up surprisingly well. So if you enjoy the Pee-wee Herman character, Paul Reubens sense of humor, and you haven't seen the movie (or it's been a long time since you last watched it), I highly recommend checking it out. It's zany, over-the-top, insanely fast-paced, and incredibly amusing.

p.s. I had no idea that Phil Hartman (RIP) was one of the writers for Pee-wee's Big Adventure before watching this video. Neat.

I honestly don't know if I have ever watched Pee-wee's Playhouse. Does it hold up as well as Big Adventure? If so, I will have to try to find a way to watch it.

Parts of Playhouse (the kids house, not the stage play) hold up on its own, as I currently separate it from Big Adventure. Certain little things about the kids' show are a no go these days, but at the same time, the show didn't set out to be offensive and did not intend to offend in any way (unlike Ren and Stimpy, for example). It was also progressive for having black characters and giving those black characters important roles. The king of cartoons was the king of cartoons... what explanation more did that require? And Cowboy Curtis went on to star in the Matrix.

I like to think as Pee Wee as the rough draft for Sponge Bob for being a reflection and succession of what Pee Wee set out to be, that is, a child-like "adult" character with a tie and a smile that approaches life and work with almost equal amounts of fun and energy (sometimes at his own personal cost) who often gets up to hijinks, and who is largely accepted in their world, as if they are normal.

But playhouse was a show for kids in the 80's whose main character was played by a man who became increasingly fatigued by his own commitment to depicting Pee Wee as often as possible.

The kid's show is about screaming and puppets with sweet footnotes of finding empathetic solutions to problems. So playhouse is playhouse and your mileage will vary.

Big Adventure is where nostalgia is not necessary, but it helps. To my recollection, Pee Wee never had a bike like that until the movie, so the importance of it made no sense to me as a kid, but makes perfect sense as a mcguffin if you're out of the loop and watching it as an adult. His house was much more magical in the kids show, too. I remember seeing the movie as a kid and wondering, "well where's Conky and Terry, and the talking chair, Captain Carl, etc? Those are important dudes and that's not his house". But it's still Pee Wee and it's an excellent movie and wonderful adventure that's as appropriate for kids as it is for adults, even if his kids show elements are 99% ignored.

So you can totally skip the kids show is what I'm saying.

Huh, interesting. Your comment actually just brought a bunch of memories flooding back. As soon as you mentioned the talking chair, I remembered them, the robot, a bunch of other animated object characters, and the theme song too! And after watching the trailer on IMDB, I recognize that set... especially the big red door! So I must have actually seen it at some point. I was a child of the 80s, so I shouldn't be surprised. But I am surprised that I drew such a blank at first though. Weird.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply, but despite you saying I can skip it, I am definitely going to seek it out since I actually do want to see it now after all that. :P
