As someone who really likes the original movie, and hasn't seen the musical, this probably isn't for me but perhaps it'll be popular among the fans of the Broadway show.

Seems like the studio doesn't have a lot of faith in it: Releasing it in January; not acknowledging that is based on the musical, and relying heavily on nostalgia to advertise the movie.
