I didn't realize all it took to decide people like musicals again is one good opening weekend and hype about another musical. Quality reporting right there.
The new joker will determine the fate of theatrical musicals.
So hyped for that
Here are the Domestic Totals of other post-pandemic musicals released in theaters:
West Side Story: 38M
In The Heights: 29M
Cyrano: 3M
Dear Evan Hansen: 15M
Wonka outgrossed all of those in it's opening weekend. And with the holidays coming up, and really severe lack of competition, it should be the highest grossing musical since The Greatest Showman. It's also doing well internationally already reaching 150M WW and going well on it's way to a 400M+ WW total. As for The Color Purple, pre-sales on it are doing pretty well suggesting a 20M gross on Christmas Day alone.
I didn't realize this was a full-fledged musical. Maybe other moviegoers didn't either
