On the topic of Alien, how do people view the relationship between that franchise and A Quiet Place? The intersection of sci-fi and survival horror, with an emphasis on humans not surviving particularly well, is really interesting to me. But I don't know if A Quiet Place is viewed as a real competitor or in the same sub-genre or whatever.

I never thought to relate them both. A Quiet Place always felt like a more human story than a horror movie. So I wouldn't call it a competitor at all.

It's an interesting thought though, right? When you want to create a good movie monster there might be certain things to look at. The classic ones, vampires, wolfman, swamp thing, inspire fear in certain ways sort of like how different varieties of zombies have their own quality to them.

When they were creating the xenomorphs, they wanted an apex predator that was more than just successful within a specific environmental niche. It's able to adapt and be successful in every niche. And it's not just an apex predator, it's something that even humans can view as being their natural predator.

It's been a while since I've watched A Quiet Place but it struck me that the aliens, I won't get into spoilers, have their unique ability, but there are some added layers on top of that. I wouldn't rank them at the level of xenomorphs in terms of being the perfect apex predator, but humans are forced to adapt their lifestyles to the abilities of the aliens and this sort of new hierarchy of the food web. Or I could be reading too much into this. ;D

This is something that Alien didn't do. There, the monster was a given fact, and the only narrative dynamic was the human surviving it.

I think the explanation that the aliens are a weapon sent by something else is the only explanation that makes sense for the universe. Even then, given their central weakness, there has been a lot of discussion online on how the world could actually even fall. I've always chalked it up with people surviving in better conditions and global communications being severed rather than everyone living like Krasinski's family on a rural farm and nothing else remaining.

I'm happy to see that they seem to have gone with this route here, because so many places in the world exist that emit high pitched noises that a mass landing and quick overwhelming of human forces is the only thing that makes sense. It surprises me that New York or any larger city wouldn't just completely overwhelm the aliens with its soundscape.

It's a central feature of post-apocalyptic media that the apocalypse part is much less interesting than the post part. It's always about putting modern humans who have grown up in our society into new situations and seeing how they develop. This movie is forcibly going to be much more about the apocalypse part, because it by set-up alone can't be a post-apocalyptic movie.

I think as long as the movie is baseline decent and people adjust their expectations to that, it's going to be fun ride. Aliens was a very natural addition to the Alien franchise simply because you have to show a monster eventually and once you do, it'll get less frightening.

They are different genres of horror. Alien is the kind where you can just go boomboom on the aliens and kill 'em all. It's a valid tactic, they are a finite number and killable. In A Quiet Place...

In A Quiet Place and (most) Zombie movies, the bad guy is more like a force of nature. You can avoid it, redirect it and beat it back for a while - but you can't go to war with it and win.

I don't love the way the trailer looks, I'll be honest. But I'm still looking forward to it. This is from the Pig guy.

It doesn’t look as pretty as the Krasinski movies.
