With a 135M budget and a worldwide opening of nearly 200M this is another success for both Legendary and Warner Bros after their success with Dune: Part Two.
If one movie deserved the title of savior of movie theaters, it’s Godzilla v Kong. The 2021 theatrical slate was empty before GvK opened successfully. Thanks to WarnerBros project popcorn, which had movies day and date with HBOMAX, GvK was able to come out which eventually led to Spider-Man: No Way Home resetting the box office back to a version of normal. Interestingly enough Dune also came out that same year and both Dune and GvK were the only WB films that year to hit 100M DOM. That HBOMAX release paid off for their sequels seemingly.
My own thoughts on the film aside, it’s great to have another film open to this level. The 2014 Godzilla opened to 90M and with better word of mouth this should be able to outgross that.
What did fellow Tildes users think of the film? I'll be seeing it with a big group in a few weeks.
I haven't seen it but my friend who's basically an amateur movie reviewer said he enjoyed it as a "shut your brain off Saturday morning cartoon-style" movie. If Godzilla Minus One was a steak dinner drama that made you care about the characters, this is a greasy burger.
Hope that helps! He and I vibe on movie opinions but he gets to watch more than I do
The high energy but well behaved high school kids in the audience enhanced the experience! We had good laughs and good reactions during the fight scenes!
@mycketforvirrad I believe the word Legendary should remain capitalized in title, it is referring to the production company
Thanks!
