Movie of the Week #32 - The Wicker Man
We begin June with Robin Hardy's The Wicker Man from 1973 which is now considered a horror cult classic.
Since this is the month of horror movies, did you find it scary, unsettling, creepy, eerie, spooky or horrifying?
The rest of the schedule for June is:
- 10th: Ravenous (1999)
- 17th: X (2022)
- 24th: The Exorcist (1973)
II'm late, but finally watched with the wife and she loved.
Whenever I rewatch this I am baffled that I forgot this is basically a musical. And a really good one.
The entire movie I root for the islanders and hate Sergeant Howie, but that final scene makes me very sad for him. The despair is palpable and his acting is really good. God was not there.
This movie is simply amazing and a work of art. I'm glad I rewatched it.
I hadn't seen this before and the ending definitely caught me off-guard. It is a really slow progressive steady buildup towards the climax. Since most scenes are in broad daylight and everyone is generally pleasant and friendly, the slight off-putting undertone is well hidden at first. The oddities mostly appear strange and weird, and not scary until the full picture is revealed later.
It is easy to compare this to Midsommar as they have quite a few similarities. However I liked this better as it doesn't need to rely on shock value, and the script is tighter and simpler. Midsommar wanted to do too many things at once. Happy this was nominated.
Yeah this is like the folklore horror film that Midsommar was most inspired by. I don’t really care for Aster, I think he relies on shock value and is overall just pretty pretentious. But Wicker Man is great, saw it for the first time three years ago and was really engrossed in the mystery.
Lol. I actually watched this pretty recently, after having read about it for some time. The next year, Christopher Lee and Britt Eklund would both star in the Roger Moore Bond film "The Man With the Golden Gun".
I was particularly impressed with the whole "Willow's Song" sequence near the start of the movie, but I'm just a dirty old man at heart.
Pinging @crdpa since you nominated this, your opinion will be greatly appreciated. Did you manage to show it to your wife?
Sorry, guys. We are in a middle of a trip to Peru and won't be back until June 13th. Unfortunately I didn't take this into account while participating in the thread. My bad.
Promise I'll do this as soon as we are back.
If you are willing, I would love to hear about traveling in Peru. It's on my list
It's really good, specially seeing the ruins like Machu Picchu and Ollantaytambo. If you get a guide you get to understand how they lived.
We didn't get a guide for Machu Picchu because they were quite expensive and not necessary after you visit other ruins because it is basically more of the same thing, but you must visit Machu Picchu anyway because it is really wonderful. It is basically a city in the mountains. It is really something out of this world. And when I say mountains, it is basically on the edge of it. You walk on the edge of the mountain in paths that I thought was pretty dangerous. Be careful.
We spent one night at the Lake Titicaca with the natives and we think it was really worth it. You get to know how they live and make things work in the floating islands.
Cuzco is a city that you need to spend more time on. I say at least 3 or 4 days. Be sure to get an hotel or hostel in the historical center. The city is freaking alive every single day and night with dances, festivals, bars, everything. It is one of the most beautiful places there, because most of the cities are really ugly.
We didn't do any of the trekking to higher places like Lake Humantay because my wife didn't acclimate well to the altitude and basically was sick the entire trip.
We made the mistake to go from Lima to Puno/Titicaca by plane, going from 400m to 4500m above sea. She puked a lot, had pretty bad chills, she was shaking so bad one night that I was afraid she would die. I'm not exaggerating. I was really afraid that particular night.
If you are already used to high altitudes, it's fine. We are from Brazil so it was really bad for her. I just got headaches.
Thank you
No worries. Just a friendly reminder in case you might have missed the post. Have a good trip
